CBS really interested in buying Univision Communications(the hot Hispanic network) The Hispanic market is growing faster than traditional broadcasting, but the regulatory issue is "monumental"--and the company is "very highly valued." (CBS already owns stations in most of the Univision markets and would obviously have to divest most of the outlets it purchased.)
On the radio front, the loss of Howard Stern to the 27 stations that carried his show--"they are down, and '06 will be very tough for them"--but the beauty of radio, as compared to television stations, is that "we can change it on a dime." CBS recently filed lawsuit in which the conglomerate claims Stern defrauded CBS in the lead-up to his departure for Sirius Satellite Radio
Clear Channel Communications won an arbitration ruling that allowed it to begin running commercials on the four XM music channels it controls. XM is fighting back with this new rollout. XM has segregated Clear Channel's four soon-to-be ad-infested music stations into their own little box, apart from the rest of the service's commercial-free fare.
Banc of America Securities continued to recommend XM Satellite Radio over Sirius Satellite Radio after monthly survey results revealed that Sirius' retail share "may have peaked" in February. Sirius had 57% retail share in January, up from 54% in December, according to Banc of America's recent satellite radio survey results. However, Sirius’ retail share fell to 49% in February. The percentage of new subscribers citing Howard Stern as a "top three" factor in the survey improved to 28% in February from 21% in January, although it was below December’s 35% level.
"We continue to prefer XM, but feel [the] stock will be range bound until XM reports first-quarter subscriber additions," wrote analyst Jonathan Jacoby in a research report Wednesday.
