From the Wall Street Journal: "CBS Corp. acquired social-networking web site Last.fm Ltd. for $280 million, delving further into the music business where it was once one of the major players...Last.fm, founded in 2002, claims it has more than 15 million active users in more than 200 countries..." It's been a long time coming. Most of them have been dipping their toes in the water to check its temperature. Finally. a major radio group has taken the plunge - in a huge way.

Bravo!

Your thoughts?

Now...CBS has a horse in the web royalties race. And I am a little concerned by their melding the radio division with Last.fm.

I do find, however, the copyright royalties battle intriquing as it applies to $280-million of CBS money... Kinda like diving into a pool and finding out too late that it has no water, unless things happen awful fast...

It's my understanding that the new acquisition will be under CBS Interactive, not CBS Radio.

Never heard of last.fm before the news yesterday. Decided to give it a try. Very neat! I've been pretty loyal to Pandora lately but there have been a few things that I did not like about it: That I could download the player and had to listen in a browser window and the fact that if you don't like a song by a band/artist twice it bans that artist/band from your station. last.fm is downloadable to the desktop and you ban a song, not an musical act from a station. This is awesome!

This is a huge step forward for CBS. How long until listeners will be able to logon to CBS radio station websites, and create their own stations right there? "Create your own version of B96" for example...

Could be interesting to see where they take this.
