CBS Chatter is SO over – Bring Imus Back?

I see there is a poll on the board. I would say yes, bring Imus back. Are you going to punish a man of his stature, talent and generosity forever because of a (granted, very inappropriate) slip of the tongue? What on earth caused an old, white man to think he was hip enough to get away with a remark that even the raunchiest young rapper of any race might find problematic is beyond me. I suspect he didn’t even think about it before it escaped his big yap.

I know from experience that, when on the air, there are times when you immediately regret what just slipped out, and wish you could reach out, grab those words and stuff them back in your mouth. It’s entirely possible that is what occurred to Don in the immediate aftermath of those three words (two, if hyphenated words count as one).

However, over a career as long as his, he has uttered millions of words. Some were written down for him, most were not. Most worked, had their intended result. Others, obviously, did not.

Among the millions of words said over the years of a very successful career, he has atoned for those three and it’s time to scratch him from the “Sharpton S**t List,” pay no attention to that Sumner in the corner, let him out of the doghouse and back into our speakers.

Well put forth argument, but its too soon to consider. It was a painfull, hatefull based remark that got him into that trouble. If he were restored this early, or even earnestly considered for restoration, I think the General Public's reaction would be that of. "That was no punishment, it was just a slap on the wrist!"

That day, he and his producer were trying to one up each other with the name calling, which seemed to come much too easily, but these girls didn't deserve any of it. No, he's got to be punished. Unfortunately, you as a fan are being published with him... but remember, that day he let YOU down too.

Not that he ever backed down from saying it, but if you listen to the tape, he was clearly repeating something that had already been uttered by Bernard McGuirk. That was nothing new. Bernie's long had the reputation of being a racist and having him say something like that was no great shock. He got what he deserved. However, Imus didn't deserve the public crucifiction that he received. A suspension and public apology should have sufficed. He went out of his way to make things right, but public opinion, fueled by Rev. Sharpton, another well known racist, persuaded CBS to wash their hands of the situation by firing him. Shame on both CBS and Rev. Sharpton. Just remember, what goes around comes around. It's the karma of like!

Imus is over and if WFAN brings him back its not the same as CBS-FM coming back. The I-Man sounded old, tired, cranky, and irrelevant ... In fact dare I say I believe he is now as irrelevant as Stern is to the radio world in 2007. His only exposure on a full powered station in Southern California was on the old KPLS 830 AM back in 2002-2003 or so. His show wound up on flea-powered KCAA 1050 AM in the Inland Empire and I don't think he even had an affiliate in San Diego. (correct me if I'm wrong)

Didn't know that. Agree wholeheartedly that Al Sharpton is as racist as anyone he's ever criticized. He is a self-serving, publicity-seeking blowhard with a one-track mind. Racial harmony would be the worst thing that could ever happen to him - he'd be out of a job. Notice I will not refer to him as Reverend. No true man of God would act as he does. There are a number of black men and women who speak out on behalf of their race whom I admire greatly. He is not one of them and it's unfortunate that the networks love him and he gets so much airtime. Perhaps this belongs in another board, so I'll stop the rant, but he was one of the prime reasons Imus got the sack rather than the original suspension. But one further clarification to any African Americans reading this. As you might have guessed from my handle, I spent some time in Vietnam. Perhaps you've heard the expression, "There are no atheists in a foxhole." In Nam their were no racists. We all worked, fought, f***ed and fried our brains together. (That was some pretty good alliteration actually.) It's just a shame much of it didn't come home with us. OK I'm done.

Yup. Not surprised. The links summed up: He'll be back in Sept. It will be WFAN.

Sharpton's ok with it. Mighty... umm nice of him. 8)
