CBS Chief Wants Price to Take Over "Price."

Inside sources have informed me that CBS Prexy Les Moonves is pushing hard to have his golden boy Dave Price take over The Price Is Right after Bob Barker steps down at the end of this season.
I don't get it. The guy is a total buffoon. Those I know who have met him have indicated that the guy is totally full of himself.
Clearly not the guy for the job. What a crime. Word is Price has threatened to go back to Fox if he doesn't get the job. I say, let him go.
For TPIR fans, this is a "Price" they shouldn't pay.

And considering that couldn't even do a casino version of TPIR properly, even with cue cards, Dave Price will be absolute poison for the show.

I would like to see Rich Fields, the current announcer on The Price Is Right,to become host, and Burton Richardson would become announcer of the show. But we know Pat Sajak's work as a weatherman in Nashville before he hosted Wheel Of Fortune,so maybe the CBS president thinks that Dave Price would become the next former weatherman to host a game show.

Bob Barker made TPIR the big hit that it is. The show will falter no matter who hosts it other than Bob Barker. Retire the show so that we don't have to cry over its demise later.

Brian- I am inclined to agree with you. The loss of Barker may just kill the show. I also think Rich Fields, who loves the show and is a big admirer of Mr. Barker, would be the right guy. I know that asked Tom Bergeron but he declined.

This guy is pretty quirky for making these kinds of demands. I mean, he's not an obnoxious person, but watching him do the weather on WCBS in the morning, I was embarassed for him sometimes - he really knows how to play the role of 'goofball.' I suppose "it sells" but where did he come from? He wasn't on TV in New York City for very long, gets lucky and is put on the CBS national morning show, and now is threatening to leave if he doesn't get the job at Price Is Right? It seems like most of his recent career is a matter of being in the right place at the right time, and nothing more... where does he get off making these kinds of demands?

...if that's the case, he'd be a perfect replacement, since Barker is so full of HIMself that a lot of crew people at Television City can't wait for him to leave...

I disagree...unless you have another great idea that gets people to watch something that will both have commercials and constantly show the "Actual retail price" of the products and/or services in the ads you just watched.

I love TPIR very much, but sometimes it amazes me that they don't just say "You just saw an ad for that car...what do you think the actual retail price is..."

Price was at CBS's WBBM-2-Chicago for a couple short years in the mid-90s as morning weatherclown (management and the local chicago viewers couldn't stand him, either) then he jumped to Philadelphia's Fox O&O WFTX-29, as morning weatherclown on "Good Day Philadelphia" before moving on to Fox's WNYW, WCBS and the network. I honestly don't remember where I read he came from when he joined WBBM...though I want to say somewhere in small-town Minnesota (believe it or not, prior to starting his wacky weatherman schtick, he was an accountant or something equally mundane). If you have access to the Chicago Sun-Times archive, TV Columnist Robert Feder has a good article from several years ago fleshing this all out.

Not that any of this matters when Mr. Julie Chen has a man-crush on you and wants to keep you from jumping ship.

Have they ever shown spots for motor vehicles on TPIR outside of station breaks?

Les Moonves doesn't always get his way, of course. As I understand it from various game shwo forums, a few years ago he wanted the classic Price theme changed. Ironically, the theme that Moonves wanted was the theme that was used as the "Come on Down" music on the Million Dollar Spectaculars...nice for its purpose, but not as a main theme.

As long as Roger Dobkowitz still has his pulse on the production angles of the show, I think we might be spared of Price.

Nah, they should use the jazzy TPIR theme used on the 1994 nighttime version with Doug Davidson; it was also on "Bruce's (Forsyth) Price is Right" in Britain.

But with Barker about to call it a career...does this mean TPIR will be offering foreign cars again? And does this also mean Clock Game will FINALLY go digital?

I'm surprised that the show didn't end up using the 1994 Davidson version of the theme for the Barker version. I guess Barker was against it. However they certainly use a bunch of the 94 cues for the daytime version now. I am fairly certain that Barker's departure is going to result in many cosmetic changes of the show. Most likely the set and theme. These changes in addition to Barker leaving will probably kill the show within two years.

I don't consider myself a pessimist. However this may end up being the worst decision that CBS makes since they hired David Lee Roth to take over for Howard Stern. We all saw how well that worked out.

Kathleen Bradley is that you??? ;D
