CBS College Football on MY TV 59

MarcB said:
How much is Channel 3 WFSB paying LIN-TV to air CBS College Football on Channel 59? And why are they doing this? Is it so that Channel 30 won't have a monopoly on the News at 5PM?

This subject came up a year or so ago.I think it was agreed on that if a network affiliate did not want to air a show the affiliate this case (WFSB) is allowed to put out to bid to other stations in the market permission $$$ to air program. As to why they are doing this in this case. No idea.

I don't know the specifics here but usually...

The contract is between the station and the network. WFSB has "rights of first refusal" -- their affiliation contract means that CBS must offer the football games to them first -- but FCC regulations require that WFSB be allowed to refuse to carry any CBS program they don't want to air.

If WFSB does refuse a CBS program, CBS must offer that program to other stations in the Hartford market.

If another station does choose to carry that program, it's between CBS and the other station (in this case WCTX) to make any financial arrangements. WCTX may pay CBS for the right to carry these games -- or CBS may pay WCTX -- either way, WFSB isn't involved, they are neither paying nor being paid.

It's not at all unheardof for a station that intends to refuse a network program to help the network find another station to carry it.

Bad move on WFSB even if many people in Connecticut wouldn't have watched Arkansas at LSU. LSU is the #1 ranked college football team.

It couldn't be because of Better Connecticut could it? Its the long Thanksgiving Weekend so they could do without that show on Friday.

I would think their local news would be more lucrative. By the way, who was the young woman with Al Terzi anyways? (Sorry, I barely watch WFSB for news anymore.)
