CBS coverage of the PGA Championship

If I'm reading my local paper, the Greensboro (NC)
News & Record, correctly, CBS got some criticism for
starting its Sunday coverage of the PGA Championship
at 3 PM (Eastern). It seems the PGA people knew
there were thunderstorms predicted in the area around
Springfield, NJ, yet did not try to get an earlier
airtime so that the tournament could be completed before
that second weather warning went out at 6:35, forcing play
to be suspended until 10:05 this morning.

Phil Mickelson, who went on to win it, said he asked that
tee times--and the broadcast time--be moved back an hour.
Steve Elkington and Stuart Appleby also went on
record as being disappointed that the tournament did not
end yesterday and that the finish had to be aired at 10 AM
on a Monday.

I am under the impression that CBS did not even attempt to
talk the PGA people into changing the times for Sunday's round.

Does anyone know the straight scoop on this?
Edited by bpatrick on 08/15/05 11:41 PM.

Well, let's start here...

CBS hit the air at 2 PM ET, with the final pairing teeing off at 3 PM.

Probably because the folks at Augusta National did just that last April on the day before the final round when they knew bad weather threatened. Ultimately, the final call this week rested solely with the PGA of America, as it did with the Augusta National in April.

CBS has used its Majors as a lead-in to that famous stopwatch of theirs for some time now. They must have thought there would be no problem, therefore no request needed. Even if they thought otherwise, see above.

BTW: The PGA allows players a set amount of time to complete their round, assuming no unforseen difficulties. In this case it's around 3 1/2 hours. So if Phil and Davis had not been interrupted along the way by Mother Nature they could have finished in ample time to allow for the trophy ceremony before 7 PM ET, barring a playoff.

If things had stayed on schedule and the weather hadn't been so threatening, we wouldn't be discussing this now. The round obviously could have been finished in that extra hour. On the other hand, moving tee times around was an option - but only if they felt it was necessary before the round.

(TNT would have been affected, too.)

I was also very surprised CBS broadcast the conclusion of the final round live on Monday morning at 10 A.M. EDT (were there delayed broadcasts in the Mountain and Pacific time zones to accomodate "The Early Show"??).

I thought that TNT would have shown the conclusion of the final round live in the morning with an edited version (running for an hour) airing on CBS at 5 P.M. EDT/PDT, 4 CDT/MDT to at least make it available to some working people who were unable to watch the finish live that morning.

On the other hand, that would have eaten into the high-profit local 5 P.M. EDT/PDT newscasts on most CBS affiliates (or "Dr. Phil" on KYW-3 Philadelphia and WBZ-4 Boston).

No. Everyone got the golf Live as far as I know. Certainly did in Seattle.

Since the golf was over around 8:20am PDT, did CBS JIP the normal west coast delay of "Early Show" or did they do a special live edition to fill the hour?
