CBS & Cumulus to launch sports radio network. 610 will carry.

The presser does say the FM will air "various components" of the new network while the AM will take it as their 24/7 lineup. It does allow CBS/Philly to axe a few talk hosts....no need for a host on 610 during Phillies games for example. And does the FM stay local overnights? In an unmeasured Arbitron daypart, is there really a need for an overnight talk host outside of special circumstances? It may be just as easy to run the birdfeed between Midnight at 5:30.

I'm not up on my sports broadcast rights, but does CBS Radio own any. I know Westwood One has NFL and is linked to CBS in some fashion. But could this mean CBS challenges ESPN for national radio rights for NBA or MLB. Just a thought. And could any of the WIP talent be tapped to host the national shows they plan to produce???

Okay... so we now have national radio sports services from ESPN, CBS, NBC, Fox and Yahoo. I can't imagine this many will survive. I suspect it'll boil down to ESPN and CBS as the two full-time national services with part-time service from NBC, particularly during Olympic season. I really don't mean to be snotty here... but is Fox Sports successful on and radio station anywhere? I have to think they'll end up as a part-time service with its strongest elements being syndicated.

Fox is distributed by Premiere, so it's on a lot of smaller Clear Channel AM's around the country. They'll stay in the game for awhile simply due to that. Cumulus works with both ESPN and now this new entity. CBS will have it's all sports stations tied in, which means major market clearances. Those three should survive. I think NBC's new service won't last long and Yahoo will be the first to fold.

It won't be long before it lands on WFAN New York. Might this be the start of the migration of WFAN to FM? CBS Sports Radio on 660 AM and The Fan live and local on FM. :)

Not until 660 AM stops making money like 610 AM did.

I agree completely. CBS will not mess with the Fan as long as it still delivers the goods on 660. It is interesting to note that ESPN radio, even with both an AM and FM signal, still doesn't cover the NYC metro as well as 660. I know, the AM will soon be ESPN Deportes (a mistake IMHO).

I predict WFAN moves to 92.3 labor day weekend

Here are two equations:
a) Profit of WFAN on 660 + Profit of a music format on 92.3
b) Profit of WFAN on 92.3 + Profit of CBS Sports Network on 660

I think a is likely to be greater than b for some time. Eventually that will change, but they won't flip 92.3 to sports until right before they think that will happen.

Agreed:

The link said that KTCK in DFW, a Cumulus station and currently a YSR affiliate, will now switch to CBSSR. What about CBS-owned KRLD-FM (105.3 The Fan)? Makes more sense CBSSR will end up on the parent network's station. :)

I don't think WIP will drop its overnights. WIP is a full service sport talker. You drop overnights, you hurt the brand. Like a music station not playing music overnight.

Big Daddy Graham is very popular with WIP listeners, and the station would no doubt face some backlash if they replaced him with a satellite feed. Add in many games end leading up into the overnights, and the bars close around 1:00AM/2:00AM these are prime listening hrs many nights for many people, even if they're meaningless as far as arbitron is concerned.

In the past WIP has shown it is more willing to try and fill up weekend dayparts, by airing Phillies Sunday games, & eagles games. My bet is that will continue, and weekend dayparts will be where you see this new network pop up on 94.1. When the eagles have a MNF or SNF for example, barley anyone is listening to the station during afternoon football games.

I think the sports stations that are remaining local will run the network's updates at the top of the hour.

Also, I assume that in the future, the network will acquire some national play by play rights that the local stations will carry.

Anyone know when Dial Global's NFL deal expires?

I hope not! Boomer will probably fly nationally, but Carton? NO WAY!!!! Carton has made me switch to Mike & Mike in AM Drive! Carton is obnoxious and a turncoat! He's a Mets fan until 9/1, then he becomes a Yankees fan when the Mets are out of the race, with his chruch "Mets Fans For Yankees". Carton got humbled when his Jets crashed last season while the Giants went on to win the Super Bowl. When the Giants lost to the Redskins for the second time last December, he said he'd quit his job if the Giants won the Super Bowl! We all know what happened but Carton is still there!

IMHO, Carton's obnoxious act wouldn't do well nationally! He's already wearing thin in NY! Don't do this, CBSSR! And don't stick NY with more syndicated programming! :(
