CBS Cuts Impact Newsradio Nationwide

http://www.mediapost.com/publications/article/253999/cbs-radio-lays-off-hundreds.html

While WWJ is the only news station listed in this announcement, I suspect there were layoffs, some possibly involving on air staffers, at other stations.

The only possible good thing will be if this improves return to the point that CBS doesn't divest radio.

My gut tells me CBS, like Disney, wants nothing to do with radio anymore and is just trying to make its properties more attractive to potential buyers. But how many stations do EMF and Salem need?

I don't see that at all. I think they're sticking to their strategy of concentrating on Top 20 markets where they also own TV. But along the way, they need to economize their AM operations, because those audiences are not growing.

The fact is that if CBS sells or trades any of their stations, the new owners will have to do the exact same thing, because CBS has been running a little on the fat side compared to everyone else. I can't think of any possible new owners who'd run those stations any better.
