CBS Early Show...take all of it or none

Affilates that carry only the 8 AM hour of the Early Show will have to carry the 7 AM hour as well starting in January.

I am sure many of these affiliates will do what is allowed under FCC regulations...preempt the whole show. They would make more money going alone with a local show (as was the case with WAGA Atlanta in 1992, before the switch to Fox).

CBS just needs to cancel the Early Show.
 
WWL-New Orleans dumped "The Early Show" 3 or 4 years ago in favor of all local "Eyewitness Morning News" from 5 - 9am. I wonder if KHOU-Houston will dump the whole show as well. Their morning news is fairly competitive with Ron Trevino and Debra Duncan at the helm. KRIV would be their only competitor from 7:00 - 9:00am if they did.
 
WFSB in Hartford possibly can discontinue the 7AM hour of their newscast. They, after all, are debuting a newsmagazine show of their own at 10AM in the Fall. But, I'm not speaking for them. They really don't cut the 7AM hour of TES. Actually there is more Early Show that hour than WFSB's news. They've done this for years, even when the show was called CBS This Morning.
 
WFSB should just pass CBS through in the 7 o'clock hour. Plus, with none of this CBS show in HD like the other two, people immediately see it as an also-ran. :-\
 
Good. Anything to lessen the junior high production level of the newscasts at our Raycom-owned affiliate, WTOC. They're unwatchable, as is the imaging and the station as a whole, outside of CBS programming.
 
I have to say I do like Harry Smith... :)

CBS has never had any success with a morning show ever, at least not since the days of doing hard news in the morning. From that ridiculous thing with Bob Saget and Mariette Hartley to Phyllis George's terrible journalism, it caused the show much disgrace. The likeable attempts of Swayer&Kuralt, Maria Shriver's stint and Smith&Zahn all failed miserably, and of course the Bryant Gumbel stunt failed too.

The only time CBS This Morning ever got a leg up was when it passed GMA in the ratings when GMA was suffering through the Lisa McRee/Kevin Newman period, even at a time when many, many of the stations were pre-empting the first hour of it. Even we did that one, and I also know CBS O&O KCNC did as well!

However, once the Early Show launched, most of the stations that were pre-empting This Morning's first hour carried both hours of The Early Show at CBS' demand. But of course some never complied and some have started pre-empting again, at a time when networks are more aggressive than ever in curbing pre-emptions.

You do, however, get both hours of The Early Show, although it's
8-10 AM, as I do on WFMY. I doubt if either station is affected by
the CBS mandate. Two more stations that I think will be affected
are WTVF Nashville and WLKY Louisville, both of which carry only
the 8-9 hour.

What about if KYW moves the Early show to its sister station WPSG and eyewitness news to 4 hours from 5-9 AM, can that be allowed to happen even though the 2 stations are owned by CBS?
 
KENS-5 in San Antonio will also be affected by this since they carry Eyewitness News This Morning from 5 AM to 8 AM.

And in the article I see that "significant changes" are coming to The Early Show. Is there a possibility that Katie Couric may be moving to The Early Show where she belonged and needed to go in the first place?
 
They would be smart to move Katie to mornings. They really need to go HD with the show too.
 
Katie back in mornings - clever idea! Although I wonder if there was a clause in the contract that restricted her from doing mornings opposite her old stomping grounds at NBC - a non-compete, if you will - of course if there even was one, you'd have to think it'd be done with by now...

I don't think this can be likened to moving game shows to an indie, or a soap opera to a Spanish station (hi, Boston!) It's a vital cog in the promotions portfolio for CBS. That's basically what these shows have amounted to these days. It's best to remain on their own channels.
 
I know that I was but 5 years old when Barbara Walters left The Today Show on NBC to go to ABC in 1976 to join Harry Reasoner on the ABC Evening News. I was just wondering if this compares to what Katie Couric is going through or not. How were ratings back when Barbara joined Harry Reasoner from 1976 to 1978 and compare that to Katie on CBS now?

But I think and I don't know for sure but KYW-TV is dead last in the ratings from 7-9 AM Monday-Friday so maybe expanding the Eyewitness News newscast to 4 hours might help the stations ratings some during that time period.
 
Just as when Katie took over at CBS, there was an
uptick in ABC's ratings when Harry and Barbara first
teamed. And as was the case with Katie on CBS,
Harry and Barbara soon found themselves in third
place again.

Harry resented Barbara, and that was obvious for
anyone to see. Having negotiated Howard K. Smith
out of the co-anchor position so he could anchor solo
the year before, to lower ratings than he had with
Smith as it turned out, Harry wasn't at all happy about
co-anchoring again.

By January 1978 Harry and Barbara were no longer
appearing together on-camera, while Frank Reynolds
and Peter Jennings were brought in as "sub-anchors,"
introducing and reporting their own stories from the
field. The ratings actually went up, prompting Roone
Arledge to expand the concept into World News Tonight.
That's when Barbara began doing specials, and Harry
went back to CBS and 60 Minutes.
 
I wonder how many CBS affiliates that carry only
the second hour of The Early Show will drop it
altogether and add another hour of local news?


Also, what is this about a soap in Boston on a
Spanish-language channel? I know Bold And
The Beautiful transmits in SAP, but my first
assumption is that WBZ is trying to get rid
of Guiding Light. What's the story?

My point about WTOC still stands. Until their GM retires or resigns, that station will continue to be the unwatchable mess it has been for so very long.
