CBS Evening Blues

I've mentioned before that KPHO has their work cut out for them trying to make up for the network's big Katie Couric mistake.
Here's some more detail on the magnitude of the problem at the national level:
http://www.philly.com/inquirer/entertainment/20070422_Gail_Shister___CBS_evening_blues.html

CBS Evening News overall viewership is down 5% fom last year and down 30% from when Couric debuted as the CBS anchor (anchor around CBS's neck is more like it). In some cities the damage is a whole lot worse than that.

Katie Couric's declining ratings as a lead-in are continuing to hurt the evening news offerings of a number of local CBS affiliates too, like KPHO.

I wonder what CBS will do with Katie. Supposedly, her contract forbids putting her on mornings. Maybe the lead anchor/interviewer on 60 Minutes or something???

CBS should have learned from the Bryant Gumbel fiasco 10 years ago. Just because someone is successful on the am fluff does not mean that they will be successful in prime news slots. I was willing to give Katie a chance, but clearly the handwriting is on the wall at this point.

Certainly, KPHO's early evening newscasts could use the ratings help -- although there are so many newscasts in Phoenix between 4:30pm and 6:30pm.
