CBS expects to do another Gameshow Marathon

Even though ratings were low, CBS still plans to go ahead with another Game show Marahon for a Spring/summer run in 2007 anyway.
Wether or not Rikki Lake will return as host has not been determined as of yet.

(I'm glad, because I'm one of those people who enjoyed the Marathon very much.)

If they do another gameshow marathon, please replace Ricki Lake. She is a terrible host. Have Bob Barker host the TPIR portion of marathon and Richard Dawson host the Family Feud portion of marathon. Since Gene Rayburn is dead, have Alex Trebek host Match Game.

While I do agree with Bob Barker being the host of the TPIR portion as it only makes sense, I wonder if Richard Dawson is A). Even alive and B). In ANY condition to host anything given his age if he IS alive.

If Richard Dawson isn't alive (which I seriously doubt he is), the role of hosting the Family Feud portion should go to Pat Sajak since Ray Rhoades (sp?) has pretty much disgraced himself and Pat would be needed to host the Wheel Of Fortune portion anyway.
Since Gene Rayburn is dead, have Alex Trebek host Match Game.
Alex Trebek would look out of place hsoting the Match Game portion. Either Bob Barker or Chuck Woolery would be make better hosts.

As for a suitable replacement for Ricki Lake as overall host, I say give that job to Regis Philbin. He may not have been a good daytime game show host, but he's made myself quite a name with his Live With Regis & Kathie Lee (Now known as Live With Regis & Kelly ) daytime talk show. Makes perfect sense to me.

Lastly, I think that, as as added incentive, CBS should set aside a certain percentage of all the winnings on each show and donate it to a charity of their choosing. What do you think?

Cheers :)

Don;t know about "B", but yes, he's still alive.

I don't think Ray Combs disgraced himself, but he did kill himself in 1996 -- he hanged himself at a mental hospital.

More on Ray here:

I do think they should absolutely go with a different host for each individual game. I imagine it would be hard for one person, no matter how talented, to master hosting all those different shows in the time leading up to the taping, and then come across looking comfortable doing it.

And, yeah, I would hope they don't bring back Ricki Lake. I was surprised they went with her in the first place considering the number of people Viacom and CBS have in house who could do it - someone mentioned Trebek and Sajak, they also have Jeff Probst. I've seen him fill in for Regis and he's pretty good outside of the Survivor format. How about Letterman? (Yeah, like that would happen)

Another person I'd like see given a chance to host one of these shows, maybe Match Game, would be Craig Ferguson.

CBS should use one of their people anyway since it gives for a nice chance to cross-promote another show on the network. I always thought using Ricki Lake was a wasted opportunity in that regard.

Anyone who watched the ill-advised return of Richard Dawson to Feud in 1994-95 would have to recognize he was in no shape to host the show more than a decade ago, let alone now.

As an avid, perhaps even rabid, game show fan, I saw no problem with Ms. Lake's hosting job. This whole idea that one has to have been a game show host before to be able to do it now is inane--she brought a different style to the shows that was refreshing, as was seeing a woman host all of those programs.

I don't believe Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy could be part of the next Marathon, if there is one--Freemantle doesn't own the rights to those shows.

I'd guess that the shows might be different ones from last time. I would say use a host that was associated with it where possible. If a show that is still currently on is used, use the current host. Perhaps if one of the shows had a panel and a host associated with it isn't available, that a regular panel member could be used. The only way someone unrelated to the show should be used is if nobody else from past versions is available.

Yeah, seeing her try to do Price Is Right was extremely weird.

Because last I checked, Bob Barker is indeed still quite with us.

When the host of a current show is available, uhhhh...call me crazy, but why not get that person to host it? Wheel and Jeopardy are both King World properties, and King World is now under CBS Corp so I'm sure they could kinda, ummm...work that out.

If they were to also involve viewers via an at-home participation component - either the way Deal or No Deal does it or some other way, it'd be a slam dunk.

But, to me, anyways, it takes me out of the show - it messes up the experience of watching a game show, if the host is not in complete command of everything that's going on, and she wasn't.

Yes, please do get rid of Ricki Lake. How about this: Bob Barker hosts TPIR segment, current host Richard Karn hosts the Family Feud segment, Peter Marshall hosts the Match Game segment (from what I remember I thought Peter Marshall was Gene Rayburn's brother, but I don't recall where I read this). Perhaps they'd even bring up a couple of more games from the past. GSN is suppose to still have access to the old game board from the original Press Your Luck (if anybody saw the behind the scenes documentary on the contestent who figured out the original patterns the board had). Too bad Peter Tamarkin is gone, but they could always get the host from the "new" Press Your Luck" (i.e., Whammy!) to host it.

Excellent suggestion on having regular "off the street" people get the prizes. If they want to use celebs why not have they win for charity instead? That's why I tuned out shortly after each show open - who wants to see celebs win more stuff that they could just buy with their own money anyways?

Richard Karn is out at the Feud. John O'Hurley is in.

I think Marathon is broken with one host. And having 4-5 hosts would confuse it more.

In the first Game Show Marathon, the celebrities did play for charity, and there was a text message and Internet game for viewers, who would win the prizes that had been won by the winning celebrity in each night's game. One of the biggest problems was that most of the celebrities who played were of the grade C (or worse) level. The biggest name celebrity to play was Leslie Nielsen, who really hasn't done much in recent years, and the Match Game panel did bring back Betty White, who was a semi-regular. I'd be for getting regular contestants.

Something I noticed in another thread was that the rights to all the shows that were used were owned by Fremantle, who owns all the old Goodson-Todman shows and a few others. The ones owned by Fremantle that are currently still on the air, The Price is Right and Family Feud, were both used last time. The other game shows that are currently still on the air, Wheel, Jeopardy, and Millionaire, are all owned by Sony or Disney, so there may be a problem there. I'd guess that what will be used for the next series will be more G-T shows or other shows that Fremantle owns or can get rights to at least for the series.

I suspect the idea was to create a unified theme--same players, same host. It's thinking outside the box, much like having some young whiipersnapper named Bob Barker take over Price is Right when Bill Cullen from the previous version was still very much with us back in 1972. I think that experiment turned out ok.

Depends on whether Sony has any interest in letting them do it. King World syndicates them, but Sony owns the rights to the formats.

Regarding an earler comment about Family feud, because it will be a special 30th year for feud, with highest respect to the very idea that Richard Dawson may not be in the best shape to host a gameshow, I still say the original host should make a guest appearance, at least.

I agree, better celebrities. I only knew Leslie Nielsen, Lance Bass, and Kathy Najimy. Get more B type celebrites like Drew Carey on the next Marathon.

Getting off topic but still on gameshows, I've always wanted to see a special celebrity Jeopardy with Jessica Simpson, Paris Hilton and Anna Nicole Smith as contestants. This way, America can see if they are that stupid in real life.

"Ok Paris, here's the daily double: This Arkansas based company was originally a Walton's 5 and Dime and now has grown into the #1 retail store in the world in terms of sales and location."

Paris: "Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....What is Victoria's Secret?"

Uh, not ALL the game shows shown on GSM1 were Goodson-Todman

Lets Make A deal was a Stefan Hatos/Monty Hall Productions

And the Caruthers Brothers were responsible for the original Press Your Luck.

I've read where Fremantle now owns Press Your Luck, and they may have bought the rights to use Let's Make a Deal for Game Show Marathon. They also now own Sale of the Century and Scrabble. That is what I meant when I said they owned other shows as well.

Here is a link to a Wikipedia article on Fremantle: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FremantleMedia

The most appealing thing about game shows is seeing "regular" people win. The stars on the first marathon had no motivation to do well; except for trying to outdo the hostess for camera time. The battle of the egos was awful!! Maybe I'm in the minority here...but I don't want to see any celebrity game shows. Let real people experience the winning of the prizes. I'd be hooked then.
