Diplomacy on a message board?!!?!?!?!??!?!?!

What is this world coming to?

O-Rock was at its best when it was breaking new and unique-sounding artists like Gnarls Barkely and Gorillaz while giving a nod to the less-mainstream classics of days gone by ("Little Black Backpack," "Got You Where I Want You," etc.). I remember hearing the 9-minute "Jesus of Suburbia" by Green Day and thinking how great it was that a commercial radio station would play something like that.

Within months, the station turned into a predictable and homogenized crap-fest. "Hey There Delilah," Nickelback, and the Foo Fighters were played every two hours or so. The argument could be made that the playlist was based on research of what Orlando was buying, downloading, and requesting, but I can't help but wonder if the station would have stayed afloat had it given Orlando a REAL alternative rather than sharing 90% of its music with the other rock station in town. We'll never know and that's a shame.

To blame Bobby Smith seems unfair to a certain degree. None of us know how much freedom he was given by CBS. Just when Jody and Scott seemed to gain a huge amount of momentum and the morning show was hitting its stride, the station doubled (at least) the amount of music it was playing. Was this Bobby's decision? If so, then he just might be at least partially to blame.

The term "alternative" just about died when Nirvana broke in the early 90s. Rock radio discovered the earning potential behind grunge and that's all she wrote. Before you could say "sellout," underground bands like Green Day became huge and were embraced by the masses. There used to be something so special about finding someone else who was into Depeche Mode, The Cure, and The Smiths...but when you can go to the mall and get a Death Cab For Cutie t-shirt at Hot Topic...how alternative is that?

I have to definately agree with the one post that mentioned that AWFUL tune "Hey There Deliliah"...

That is definately one of the most wussed out songs ever recorded in the history of music, and I could not believe that alternative rock radio was playing it. I also thought the same when that tune "Stacy's Mom" started to show up on alternative rock (however the video for that song was great, with the ever lovely Rachel Hunter)...

I also never understood why Eminem showed up on alternative rock radio at times.....

However, this "History Of Rock & Roll" thing is funny as hell. The Jock is totally old-fashion, he sounds like Casey Kasem meets Dick Clark. I believe that we are hearing the version that was made at the end of 1980, because after you are treated to an hour of Olivia Newton -John (Magic), Billy Joel (all of the "Glass Houses" material ), it goes back to the fifties...I do know for a fact that there is yet ANOTHER version of this special that was produced to air during Labor day weekend 1982 in certain markets. I found this out by looking through an old Rolling Stone magazine that I own from August 1982 that has an advertisement for it....I must say however that my girlfriend and I got quite a chuckle the other night being treated to not only a good 30 minute presentation of Andy Gibb stuff, but INTERVIEWS with him also......HAHAHAHAHAHAHA...

There was plenty of blame to go around on all levels...it is highly unfair to conveniently throw it all on Bobby. Just like in any divorce...NO ONE is 100% innocent...no matter how much they think they are.

2 things.
one don't blame bobby. i bet it comes down more people than that.
and second, is wocl gonna have a new format? or is the history of rock and roll in it's future? I'm just curious. I hope we get a new format soon.

Did you guys ever notice how O-Rock used to play really LONG breaks?????

What was that all about????

Why did they play Jacksonville Jaguars football on the station?????

I don't wanna hear football, I wanna hear ROCK!!!!!!!

Anybody notice that football was on WTKS Sunday?????

Pre-emting Real Music weekend for Football??????

BOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

I really enjoyed the History of Rock and Roll the first time around, but this is now getting to be ridiculous. Let's get on with the new format. By the way, does anyone remember the other show put out by Drake Chenault around this same time called the Soundtrack of Your Life, which played all the number one singles from 1964-1981? It too was hosted by Bill Drake, if I remember correctly.

everyone listen tomorrow...they've included there launch date into their imaging...it will be this week, not tomorrow. ;)

Now this would be funny....

When this lastest edition of "The History Of Rock & Roll" ends....how about playing a 24 hour loop of American Top 40 focusing on January-March 1981!!!!!

Just an idea....

so we'll hear the format tomorrow? hope so. this history of rock and roll is getting old. on with something else already.

CR-

You're clearly intimately involved with either the station or someone who works(ed?) there. I can tell you from EXTREMELY personal experience that Bobby's hands were rather tied by the situation.

Haven't worked there for a while now but Bob is a good guy with the potential to be a great programmer who was paralyzed by the powers that be. He really did try to take risks... but unfortunately was never allowed time to let anything truly develop.

Hey Now.

DON'T HATE THE PLAYER, HATE THE GAME. I BELIEVE THAT THAT SAYING FITS THIS SITUATION.
HUH
JUST A THOUGHT.
WELL, WHATEVER. JUST 2 CENTS HERE. WELL BACK TO YOUR DISCUSSION. SO LET THE CHIPS FALL WHERE THEY MAY.

Ok people, with all youz fightin' in the back seat, don't MAKE me turn this message board around. :D LOL

At any rate, we all know what 105.9 WILL be. In this day and age, it's really nobody's fault but the big kahuna and the marketing consultants who decide what's to be played. They call the shots, while the people who we think are at fault... really aren't.

As far as the alternative/active rock market, in my opinion, it's a music style targeted strictly for adults 18-34. Granted, you may have some crossover for adults. For the most part, though, it's only going to hit a portion of the "money makers" in this market who will listen to the station's advertisers. Right now, the best music that they could play is Classic Hits, focusing mainly on 70's, with a slight dip into the mid to late 60's, and a part of the 80's that doesn't contain music relating to The Point in Tampa.

It's going to be interesting, without question. However, for a launch date, it would've made more sense to have started it Monday morning rather than during the week.... then again, maybe it IS a hoax? hehehe

It's cool. Sorry, but I get very passionate when talking about that station. I hate that it's dead, but it's funeral lasted for years.

I can only blame BS for what he did and didn't do. He didn't flip the station, but his (in)actions contributed to it more than anyone there. I know all about the gag order on talent after trying the talk/music hybrid and no, it was not his decision. Like I've said, he picked the fights he knew he could win.

There were some real risks taken on that station, Green Day's Jesus of Suburbia being one of them under his programming. However, there were far more risks taken under Alan Smith's reign, and Bobby even said he wouldn't have done half that. Even then, the playlist was tightened at one point by Alan so that the songs rotated every 45 minutes! You'd hear the same six songs (in power I suppose) four times a DJ's shift. This trend repeated itself toward the latter part of the station's life. My problem is mainly that the station was never programmed for Orlando, it was programmed for corporate on a national level that just doesn't seem to work here, like many tried to tell anyone in management.

This may go down as the worst format stunt and flip in the history of radio.

Totally unprepared, they started stunting before they hired, developed the new website etc.

Really surprised by CBS. I thought they were better than this.

Never thought I'd say "I'm sick of hearing Bill Drake".
