DICK CLARK PRESENTS REWIND

This is obviously a cost cutting move by WCBS-FM. It is a shame since years ago Max Kinkel had a big following in the overnights.

What costs are being cut? They were voicetracked by Lenny Bloch who is still there for his regular job.

I have no doubt that he did. But you're not the only individual to whom Max reported this information.

In fact, it is a widely held belief amongst Max's biggest fans (including me!) that, had it not been for Max doing overnights on CBS-FM and getting listeners hooked listening to it during that daypart, the station would not have had nearly as high ratings as they had during the rest of the day.

Kudos to Max! His overnight shows on CBS-FM are legendary. Now those airchecks are really going to be worth something someday! ;D

i'm not so sure, Cal...you got-ta remember that back when Max was at the station, it was during their FIRST peak period of ratings (PEAK to come in 2009?? Hmmm... 8)) from 1986-1996, and EVERYBODY was having HUGE ratings at that time....

And how many people listen to both overnights and mornings?
Sure some do, but not enough to make a difference.
Max has been great at promoting himself in off-air media.

but Max always had the goods to back up his promotion - that's the BIG difference... :)

question... living in Philly we had CAU-FM.. which started the solid gold radio format, when it took off many CBS stations followed in 71, I think that was the year others got on the bandwagon. I have some old tapes of when CBS-FM went oldies, when I visited my cousin in bay ridge. I noticed there was no future gold on the station and the music was a bit older and local corner groups were added. CAU-FM always had future gold 4 times an hour but I did not hear any on CBS-FM; did they ever play future gold at their start...they also had live jocks mostly from WABC whereas CAU was automated by Jim Nettleton, and CAU was mono the first few years but CBS-FM was stereo at the start is this all true just curious....

yes, it's true - at one point, CBSFM used to bill themselves as "Stereo 101"...they didn't go ALL-oldies until July 7, 1972... 8)

What goods? Obviously his station didn't think so and never even gave him a tryout in another daypart.
He was good, however, at saying his own name far more than any other jocks. :(

Both WCAU FM and WCBS FM flipped to solid gold in 1972 (WCAU just a bit earlier).
CBS FM didnt play "Future Gold" immediately, but soon did incorporate it in, but never as frequent as WCAU.
WCBS did have live jocks from the start but no ex WABC personalities at that time.
Although oddly enough, Jim Nettleton at WCAU FM WAS an ex WABC-er.
WCAU dumped the format in 1976, and in 1981 joined all of the CBS owned FM's (except WCBS FM) in the "Hot Hits" format.
(Curiously, consulted by another ex-WABC staffer Mike Joseph).

Hot Hits was awful. I never thought the presentation was good and the jingles/imaging was awful. When you compare it to what KC-101, KFRC, and later Z-100, it was amazing how out of step it was.... then again, it did exist in a time when Top 40 was on life support
