CBS-FM Flips to Jack!!

(I'm posting this on the NEPA board because of the close proximity and ties that the market has to the NYC market and also because it's shocking!)
FROM ALL ACCESS.. THIS JUST IN!!

After some stunting playing a bunch of songs with the word "Jack" edited out of the broadcast, at 5p (ET) INFINITY Oldies WCBS-F/NEW YORK flipped to 101.1 JACK-FM "PLAYING WHAT WE WANT." The first song officially aired was BEASTIE BOYS' "Fight For Your Right (To Party)." Check out the new website at www.ilikejack.com.

Said WCBS-F VP/GM CHAD BOWN, "NEW YORK deserves a radio station that is equally as eclectic as its listener's personalities and attitudes. JACK FM promises to be unlike anything currently heard in the market. Others have tried to imitate the JACK format, but time and again it has been proven that the success of the format is achieved by fully committing to its objectives and delivering a completely new and unique product. We look forward to changing the landscape of the NEW YORK radio market."

Fans of the Oldies format previously found at WCBS-F will be able to hear that music around the clock online at www.wcbsfm.com.

Mixed feelings... it is the end of an era in NYC, but WCBS has gradually moved away from real oldies, almost to an AC sound.

Who will be next?

CBS-FM was doing ok; there is speculation that this will just drag them down in the ratings. After all, it's really not "we play anything we want," but just, "we have a larger fixed playlist." If you want a real eclectic* format, listen to a college station.

I'm still in shock about this...but as the hours pass, I have reached a place of clarity with this format change. The only way CBS could reach their objectives of getting younger demos to respond to the station was to BLOW IT UP. They tried evolution...that wasnt working to their satisfaction. Now, they're trying REVOLUTION, which will work. It's likely that Infinity will ultimately flip Philadelphia, Boston, Phoenix and Dallas....and Oldies Radio will be completely off the FM dial by the end of the calendar year.

In fact, I'm sitting here waiting for Shamrock to flip WQFM, and have WFBS be the only station you can pick up in my area that features any semblence of an oldies format ( WICK doesnt reach here).Operators of FM oldies stations do not want the demos that Oldies radio delivers...they want the cast of the TV Show Friends.

It's time for me to relinquish my spot in this thread to a guy who really knows CBS Radio and knows what's coming next...enter, The Duke.

And The Truth Is That The Majority Of That Age Group Does Not Want to Hear

The Penguins, The Moonglows, The Orioles And The 5 Satins.

That Music Is Now About 50 Years Old.

It's Like Someone That Was Listening To The Radio In The 50's

Wanting to Listen To Music From 1900.

It's A Shame, But The Oldies Format On Terrestrial Radio

Has Become A Dinosaur.

Sorry To "Jack" You Up...

But "Variety Hits" Is The New Oldies.

Jeepers Cats! I actually agree with each of the previous posts, at least when I'm writing this Saturday afternoon. I also think that a few years down the road, some station will flip to oldies and everyone will think the programmers are brilliant. Oldies (I never liked that word), will live again. In the meantime, a lot of people are headed to Best Buy for Sirius or XM.

There's some irony here. The format was "jacked" to attract a newer, more eclectic taste audience with attitude. Presumabley, these are people of a younger demo who have a wide range of interests from Sinatra to Bonjovi, $30.00 cigars to Wendy's late night menu. Yet, if that older demo they just eschewed wanted to hear the oldies 24/7, they could access the website and hear all oldies, all the time. This is giving people who grew up with the songs that are now 50, like "Rock Around the Clock" and "ShaBoom" a great deal of technological credit. Or maybe they just put the oldies on the net to pacify the rumblings of WCBS FM fans. Either way, those who have WCBS FM survey sheets, hang on them. One day they might be worth an Archbald priced cup of coffee.

OK Kevin. Here's my comment.
In six months Infinity will be
where the Coke Cola company was with
New Coke. Remember ???

I say it again.. If your radio station sounds
like an iPOD you're screwed.

A good choice would be a GE Superadio III. About $50 or less new. Using one down here in Collingdale and great sound when the station it's tuned to has good audio.

A few samples from my 4 Seasons message board on WCBS FM.
******************************************************************
My husband and I Mario could not believe last night when we were
driving and he put on WCBS-FM l01.1 in our car.

At first we both thought what could have happened to our favoite oldies
station. In fact just the other day Micky Dolenz mentioned my
husbands name on the air regarding Jersey Boys coming to New York this
fall since my husband spoke to Marshall Brickman one of the writers.

This is certainly a huge loss in the New York area. WCBS-FM was a big
Frankie Valli supporter. In fact just recently there was a contest in
which many listeners won a trip to Vegas to see Frankie perform.

Youth must be served," Taylor said about the changes. "If you look at a lot of media, older Americans aren't important unless you're selling Craftmatic beds."

What a JERK...
There's more like this, but this is a sampling.

Why CBS-FM and not whatever you call the junk on 102.7? That, IMO, was more of a monkeywrench in water than legendary CBS-FM.

Hear hear! Very well put, Kevin and Duke!!!

And its sad, really. Every single FM format will be required to have some sort of urban or hispanic tinge to it.

Oldies will be off FM, along with Standards, MOR and, much to the anticipated delight of most of the mindless minions on these boards, probably rock music will disappear as well...since the records execs are forcefeeding us rap and hip hop, the kids will take over and put dance and hurban/reggaeton stations on and the rockers will be corraled over to the AM band...oh wait! AM? You'll need someplace to put 10K plus translators for Air America!!!

The death of CBS-FM should have alerted everyone to the impending apocalypse...
______________

Oldies on FM is on the way out.

We are not privvy to CBS FM's sales figures. It's possible the station wasn't earning enough money to keep the suits happy. Infinity didn't flip WNEW FM because it feared Jack would kill the CBS FM audience.

Question: traditional radio is weakening. Listeners are turning away. If you sould like an IPOD, you're screwed. What should you sound like? Lots of questions, but let's start hearing answers.

Obviously radio needs to be fun to listen to. Start with firing all these damn consultants! It's obvious they think their sound is what any praticular market needs.

Then, relax the DJ rules...as in do away with hot clocks and liner card readers, let the DJs entertain while spinning the tunes. They should complement each other. Make listening to Station X an experience again.

Finally, GO DEEP! Stop with the same safe tracks ad nauseum. Take some chances with your playlist. Remember the days when you would look forward to a roadtrip with the family because the CHR station there was different than the one at home?

Radio has gotten too homogenized anymore. The people are flocking to XM/Sirius and the internetcasters since their library is more diverse. And no, this doesn't mean I think Jack will do well...it is a format du jour. Sure, it's a large library....OF SAFE MUSIC! Tunes you can hear elsewhere....big whoop!
______________

Dave, I've always heard that, while the reception is far superior, it is not as great as the first or even second generation Superadios. Is that the case?
______________

What should you sound like?
Well, how 'bout a local radio station with local
news, information, someone to answer the phone,
maybe an editorial now and them...
maybe a listener on the air now and then.
Hey how 'bout production value... maybe the
local weather on the eights... Hey how ;'bout
a friendly announcer that has something to say....

And here's a real good one...
THE NAME OF THE SONG AND THE SINGER !!!!

The fact is DEREGULATION DESTROYED THE RADIO STATION.

JACK HITS CHICAGO TOO
from the 4 seasons threads....
>
The same thing just happened to my Oldies station here in Chicago ...
104.3 FM (WJMK) on Friday. It is now known as Jack 104.3, which
sounds like the exact same station that George Juba now has. I have
already sent the program director a note stating how displeased I am
over this format change, as this is the only Oldies station that we
had in Chicago. The radio personalities were fabulous as well.

The program director posted a letter on their website (WJMK.com)
stating that the station would live on via the Internet & that we
could listen online. But, that is not good enough. Many of us are
unable to listen via the Internet, myself included. We need our
Oldies station back as well & I hope that others will help me by
emailing their local Oldies stations that have had format
changeovers, as well as my station.

This is such a shame that this has begun to happen & it is a
humongous disappointment to many of us. We don't want this format ...
we want our Oldies back!! This was the only station on the radio here
in Chicago that I ever listened to. I no longer have a reason to want
to listen to the radio at all. Thank goodness for CD's!! Hope that
everybody is doing well. Please be well & take care.

Re: GE Superadio III

Bob, in the SR III it can be hit or miss due to the quality control. I never had the opportunity to have an SR I or II, but did have the Radio Shack 12-655 TRF about 20 yrs ago.Thankfully the SR III I have (my second)is a good little box. I've used it to hear the Red Sox games on WTIC in Hartford. Once or twice under good propagation, I've had WEEI 850 and WWZN 1510 in Boston down here at night.
All 3 of these stations have been heard off the back of their respective night antenna patterns.

AMEN! And unfortunately it has killed of one of the last remaining bastions of creative and FUN TO LISTEN TO radio with the demise of WCBS-FM. 'CBS is now just another IPOD attached to a transmitter and loaded by some kid who's too young to remember real radio anyway. Worst part is that the "kid" is probably sitting in some office a couple thousand miles from NYC and in charge of running a half dozen stations in towns and cities that he's never even set foot in. But I'm sure management just knows without a doubt that he's much more in touch with what the audience should be hearing than the local guy on the street who's in touch with what they are actually asking for. Good God!! Is it any wonder that XM, Sirrius, IPODS, and the like are gaining ground so fast? Local radio is the only medium that has the ability to be just that/// LOCAL! Unfortunately folks, we're shooting our toes off one by one and the suits calling the shots are too far removed to feel the pain. Local radio can survive and can be so valuable but only if the boards of directors allow it to be what it really is/// LOCAL RADIO! I think it was posted here recently that you used to be able to travel and get a real feel of what a particular area was like by listening to it's local radio station. Man oh man is that gone! Nobody will get it until it's too late because they all know it all already. Sad!
