CBS FM RATINGS ARE DOWN FOR FALL..THIS STATION IS BAD!!

Wow, after all the complaining that went on after CBS-FM was first "jacked", and the second round of complaints after CBS-FM returned last summer, who would have thought that we would now have a *third* round of whining about the station, this time because the station (inevitably) slid in the ratings a bit. This is the case both here and over on the dentist board, where the whining is out in full force.

It was inevitable that CBS-FM was going to level off, just as Fresh has leveled off as well. Initial sampling was huge, especially for CBS-FM, with the huge publicity that surrounded its return. Some of those listeners have tuned out, but CBS-FM is still doing quite strongly and is still doing damage to the likes of Lite FM and CD 101.9. They may even see a jump back up this month, from listeners who may have tuned out the non-stop holiday snoozefest over on Lite FM.

However, if anyone thinks that making the music *older* will benefit CBS-FM in the ratings and especially in the money demos, then they are clearly delusional.

*Ahem*....let the whining continue!

You're right on...the station HAD to level off at some point. CBS-FM has its niche and will do as well with it as the market will allow. Oldies would probably cut ratings and especially revenue in half. The one disagreement I have is that Lite FM will lose anything from its "holiday snoozefest". Typically its a ratings bump up for the station. The big test for CBS will be the spring...if its maintaining decent numbers that far into the format...they'll be in good shape for awhile.

The only thing I don't like is how they do their special weekends. Special weekends are not supposed to be Hall Of fame spotlights done once an hour period. This is what makes listeners like myself who love CBSFM want to tune out. The CBS-FM Programmers need to go back and go the original way of doing them. Plus The Top 20 countdown should not be on at 10pm in the evening on a sunday, thats too late especially for people who have to get up early for work in the am. It should be on from 5-7pm and if it must be voicetracked they should have Bob Shannon or Dan Taylor or Pat St John host it like the old days not Jeff Mazzei.

I have always enjoyed specialty programming, but the only ones heard on the new WCBS-FM are the radio great on sunday night and the top 20 countdown also on sunday. I wish they would devote an entire hour on weekday evenings to the Hall of Fame feature of the day. You can't have everything. The managment of WCBS-FM will look very carefully at sales. That dollar figure will determine the future of the format. As has been discussed before formats don't last forever.

Bingo. That's exactly the demo the revamped CBS-FM is shooting for this time around.

and it could be working CBS-FM is #1 18-34 in the Long Island PPM test..although more than anythng that shows PPM is not ready yet.

From my view in Florida, CBS stations are least likely to go to automation or VT'ing. I give them credit for the most part for staying live and local. I think CBS-FM sounds as good as to be expected. Certain things just aren't going to happen:

1) CBS-FM going 50's and 60's
2) 1130 going back to full service MOR
3) 570, 770, and 970 going CHR

Well, that's it. One down trend. They must be dead. Might as well just sign off the transmitter.

CBS-FM after the hype has worn off

WCBS-FM 101.1 and Fresh 102.7 are voice-tracked in overnights at least.

That said, TURN OFF CAPS LOCK WHEN POSTING!

WRBQ in Tampa is a good example a personality driven classic hits station. CBS has a good record of managing this format in Philly and LA. Really, what do youse guys want? Egg in yer beer?

Better watch it

The originial poster also fails note other stations fell too, are they all bad if they fall for one trend?

Yes, because we all know that not only does CBS-FM have to play only music from the 50's and 60's and maaaybe the 70's, but only the music the whiners like from that era....but also, everyone must also listen to that station, whether they like it or not. A 12+ share of 100.0 is the goal, after all. Anything less than that is a failure and the fault of the CBS brass for intentionally sabotaging the station and the oldies format by inserting 80's music into the playlist. ;D

To suggest the station's a failure because it's off .3 12 plus in a book where most people knowledgeable about radio ratings would tell you to expect a drop off...shows the original poster's utter and total lack of knowledge of radio.

Such a drop is common...and is expected in a new station's development.

Frankly, CBS-FM is doing far better than I ever expected it would be doing at this point. They will make a boatload of money off this format, because...the demos are better than with the original oldies format.

Sorry if some of you 50's fanatics can't get this through your heads, but I'll say it again.

Your enemy is not radio, its' DJ's or programmers. The people who are causing the original oldies formula to die are the advertisers who do not use radio to reach that demographic. I've said it here before. I don't agree with this...but it's the way the business is.

You want to complain? Complain to the people who buy the advertising!

Let's face it, CBS-FM is not that bad for this revived format. It's down a bit, but don't let the forest through the trees. Especailly with this "New York Radio Greats" show on Sunday nights including Don K. Reed which will be heard at the end of every month, he still sounded good playing a handful of 50's and early 60's songs on one night. Last week, Norm N Nite from Sirius Gold came back to do it again for the second time since October. This past Sunday, Steve O'Brien was on the second time in a month, but maybe in future NY Radio Greats show, I'm not really sure if Cousin Brucie will be back on CBS-FM to do one show on Sunday night or Bill Brown I suppose. I love Cousin Brucie a lot for many years he was on CBS-FM, but will it bring it back to the "New York Radio Greats" for one show? Maybe not! He is with Sirius.

And guess what, out in the mid-Hudson Valley, WBPM does the same, but if the HV fall Arbitrons coming out next month, who cares?

WKNY in Kingston, NY did well with the Saturday oldies show with Warren Lawrence from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM. I love the oldies so much that CBS-FM needs to have it back for one Sunday night show. WABC's Saturday night Oldies Show with Mark Simone does the same too, and so does WKIP up in Poughkeepsie, NY with Rick McCaffery's "Solid Gold Jukebox" is still on the current News/Talk station WKIP, but I can't get the signal there, but it's on IBOC if I'm still in the Kingston area. Rick McCaffery was great when he was on the former "Cool 92.9" last year doing the oldies show playing 50's and 60's music with the doo-wop portion from 9:00 PM until 11:00 PM. I missed Rick a lot, because he's still popular as Don K Reed is when he is still on CBS-FM during the end of every month on the "New York Radio Greats".

As for the station itself in the market, not bad for this format, because of obscure rock songs like "Radar Love" by Golden Earring and even some songs that are too hot for this format like "Like a Virgin" by Madonna and "I Got My Mind Made Up" by Instant Funk. Those songs does not fit the format for this station.

I remember many years ago, CBS-FM was playing "Unforgettable" by Nat King Cole and Natale Cole and it's still my favorite. It was on Bobby Jay's "Soul of the City" show during the overnight after "Cousin Brucie's Yearbook". That was a few years ago, but let's it!
