CBS FM Sports Lineup Projections/Predictions

This thread is strictly for the sole purpose of projecting, predicting, or confirming the new lineup for the new 92.3 (or 98.5) The Fan.

I will throw in what I think could happen:

AMD - Kiley and Booms
Noon-3 - Jim Rome
PMD - Someone from WFAN

I would beg and plead to see K&B 9-noon.

CBS likes to run things almost 24/7 in these markets, so the names are impossible. Question - when's the last time you've heard Dennis Manoloff on KNR?

CBS would be sending a huge message if K&B was slotted for 9-12. However, I would have them go 6-10am and they overlap Hour #1 of tRBS. I hope CBS can take Rome from KNR because it is very tough to listen to his show without the 1st hour.

My Guess:
6-10 Kiley and Booms
10-12 Les Levine and Bud Shaw (The lone bright spot from the ill-fated DSN)
12-3 Jim Rome (If they can get him)
3-7 Someone from WFAN

Romey is still locked up at the Galleria for a good while yet.

So him being poached is out of the question (check back this time next year).

More realistically, we're looking at:

Kiley and Booms from 6-10 a.m.

local host X from 10a-2p

local host Y from 2-6p

local host Z from 6-10p

and either FSR or Sporting News/"CBS Sports Radio" from 10p-6a

I think Les Levine's name is definitely in the hopper, but not in a slot that would interfere with his TWC TV show.

Les and Bud vs RBS perhaps?

Oh, sure, Les is always in the mix for this sort of thing, at least for his fans :)

If he'll do middays on the ill-fated DSN webstream, he'd certainly do it for a full-signal FM sports talker.

I'm just not hearing anything that they're interested in him (or Bud Shaw, or any former/current local radio sports personality of any note, with maybe one exception). I'm not saying it won't happen...I've just heard no rumblings in this corner.

My gut tells me the WFAN part-timer I've talked about lands 6-10 PM, unless they're pairing him up with someone.

The only local voices out there that I'd like to see have a real shot would be Andre Knott and Ken Carman. Ken's a young guy, but compared to some of the younger local talents out there (Goldhammer) he's above and beyond a better talent. With most of the CBS stations going near 24/7 on fm, what's to lose by giving a young guy a break with a 10p-2a or the 2a-6a slot?

I can't stand to hear the same old local names over and over again... you don't need Les Levine. Let him focus on his cable access show. Other guys who may have been mentioned? If you need some update anchors, go ahead and hire the Ruiters of the world. But not for shows.

Also, I would see if I could get Jeff Thomas away from WEOL to be a part of either the AMD show, or my preferred head-to-head matchup of KnB vs. Rizzo's Romper Room.

6-9 AM - Steve Czaban (TSN Radio Network)
9-12 - K & B
12-3 - Tim Brando (TSN )
3-6 - Les Levine
Fox Sports Radio in the evenings and then some sort of post game show for the later evenings up til midnight.

If this does happen, there will be no syndicated talent. CBS is very committed to live, local broadcasting from 6a-10p, which is really a breath of fresh air in the days of voice tracking.

I am in DC where we have 106.7 The Fan, which is CBS-run and do travel to Baltimore often, where they have 105.7 The Fan. They use separate talent and keep the focus very local for the most part. CBS does an excellent job of producing the shows and they make sure to include listener questions and comments throughout the shows. They seem to pair a "radio" guy with someone who is relevant to the topic due to their job. For instance, mid-days at 106.7 is Mike Wise (Washington Post) with Holden Kushner (radio guy) followed by LaVar Arrington (ex-Redskins linebacker) with Chad Dukes (radio guy).

Also, look for the HD signals to be used to simulcast AFC North broadcasts, based on what they have done elsewhere. In DC, the HD2-4 signals feature WIP-Philadelphia; WFAN-New York; and 105.3 The Fan from Dallas. For Cleveland, I would expect 105.7 The Fan-Baltimore and 93.7 The Fan Pittsburgh at least.

Kiley and Booms have already committed to the 6AM-10AM slot. It would be awesome to see Jeff Thomas take a role as update anchor - and actually have a strong role on the show... as opposed to how WKNR barely gave him any notice. (Easy for Jeff to leave WEOL IMO... it's only a part-time gig.)

Afternoons will be said WFAN part-timer, from 2PM-6PM. (Following the lead of most CBS sports talkers, he'll likely be paired up with a former athlete.) I'll give one hint; his bovine nickname is the same as a former 92.3 K-Rock/107.9 The End host. This person has basically been WFAN's utility man over the past five years, bouncing around between practically every slot possible on that station. Pretty much widely respected by the FANbase over there. Got a chance to listen to him last night, and IMO, this is a very good promotion.

The 10AM-2PM and 6PM-10PM slots are still open. And it's safe to say there will be tons of live weekend programming as well. Pretty much the same amount of live programming that the Cablevision-era WKNR/1220 featured - carriage of FSR or Sporting News will be very minimal, if that. Plus a roster of update anchors and beat reporters need to be assembled.

In my own personal opinion, Ken Carmen and Dennis Manoloff should be seriously considered for a midday show. Nice blend of youth and energy without the kayfabe that is tRBS. It would also be awesome to see someone like Andre Knott get the 6PM-10PM slot, perhaps alongside Daryl Ruiter. Les would be fine for a reliable weekend slot.

Doesn't look like anyone from the Galleria will be poached, nor anyone from STO.

Bob Karlovec certainly deserved better than to be phased out at WKNR in favor of the current regime. He still has got a few good years left in him as a beat reporter and producer.

Andy Roth has his work cut out for him.

Bob Karlovec and Jeff Thomas were turfed because...

1. they're not 25 years old

2. they would want to be paid in more than Ramen noodles

3. they would balk at working 16 hours a day. (Chris Fedor must have a cot at the Galleria...that and no outside life)

Andre Knott has a pretty good gig right now at WTAM, as well as his TV work on STO and WEWS, so I don't think he'll be jumping ship.

Adam's coming here? I knew we wouldn't get Steve Somers, but I'd hoped for at least a second tier guy from 'FAN.

Of course, this is sounding a lot like the Pittsburgh lineup, as long as you add a former Brown and a local writer or two, and the Pittsburgh station is doing much better financially than its music station predecessor. Artistically is a matter of opinion.

I was never surprised at that. Frankly, the way Karlovec was shoved aside was shameful. Just my own opinion. And Jeff (who never had any prominent role at KNR, even after he became an embed) is wasted away as a part-time one-man-band morning show at WEOL.

No further comment about Fedor.

What's David Kelly (son of Leroy; former WTAM newscaster/sports talk host) been up to recently? Just a thought.

I liked David Kelly too, Nathan.

It seems like he was going to Memphis to do play-by-play when he left Cleveland.

Would be great to have him back in northeastern Ohio.

Nathan's on target with the WFAN part-timer (Adam "The Bull"). I hadn't heard his time slot, just that he's heading for the Cleveland "Fan"'s weekday schedule. Makes sense to pair him up with someone if he's doing PM drive.

And good to hear about David Kelly. Looks like he ended up in Arizona taking a job with the University of Arizona's radio network (pre/post game, with IMG College), then one of the local TV stations picked him up. KSMB is the Fox affiliate in Tucson ("Fox 11").

There is one local non-Galleria name CBS is supposedly interested in, but I haven't heard anything about that happening. So far, it hasn't actually taken place...so that offer may not have been made, or that person may not want to make the change.

Sporting News Radio has been renamed "Yahoo Sports Radio". It is still Gow, it has the same programming, just a new name.

That's KMSB...oops.

Indeed and there is no Cle. affiliate listed on link below; poss. for the new sports station?

http://www.yahoosportsradio.com/affiliates/

We're hearing FSR for the late/overnight hours, much like "98.5 The Sports Hub" does in your neck of the woods.

I was talking about CBS launching their own overnight show (similar to Mr. Grayson's show, which had a cup of coffee on WBZ/1030) for the company's own sports stations. Still a rumor at this point, so don't go to the bank on it.

So as it stands right now, 92.3/98.5 "The Fan" looks like this:

Kiley and Booms 6 - 10 a.m.
Local host X 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Local host Y 2 - 6 p.m.
Adam the Bull & ??? 6 - 10 p.m.
Tony Bruno (syn-FSR) 10 p.m. - 1 a.m.
J.T. the Brick (syn-FSR) 1 - 6 a.m.

Sports PBP:
NFL on Westwood One
NCAA on Westwood One
