CBS FM STREAMING STINKS!

If by "they", you mean WCBS, there's a one word answer: Lawsuit
Personally taking a terrestrial signal and streaming it can get the streamer in serious trouble. For one thing, the RIAA will be knocking on the streamer's door.

Most likely WCBS is using an aux feed for the stream. Using the actual terrestrial signal as the stream's source, is a bad idea. All of that over-processing and clipping will play havoc with the streaming encoder / decoder.

In the on air optimod is an external input for streaming media. Maybe an idea to feed this from there so you have the on 'air sound' also on the stream. The AOL stream from CBS before the Jack flip sounds better. I think they feed this from the soundprocessor.

I am aware of this feature on the digital Optimods. I suspect those outputs are bypassing the clipper stage and pre-emphasis curve.

It's the term that explains how a broadcast over the internet can be received by a listener at his/her computer. The streaming server encodes the audio content into digital data, and sends the data to an IP address. On the receiving side, the listener's computer connects to that specific IP and changes the digital data information back to an analog signal. Of course there are usually a handful of IP nodes on the internet, that the digital content must hop over, to reach the listener. Hence why there's usally a 30 second or so delay between the time the streaming server "sends" the data, and the listener's computer receives it.
