CBS-FM Top of Hour ID

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but does anyone else agree that the WCBS-FM top of the hour ID and jingle is just about the best anywhere around? I know it's been around for quite a while, but I think it sound great.

Anyone know how long they've had it? I'm pretty sure it was around pre-Jack.

And there's always a "yeah, but..." ;)

Based on the TOH stager I heard during their Block Party Weekend
(oops, wrong classic hits station) Z-to-A Weekend via the webstream
a few days ago, WCBS-FM does not legally ID the HD1 channel.

They mention "WCBS-FM and WCBS-FM HD1" during the VO prior to the
jingle, but without "New York" following either both calls (not technically
legal, but often used elsewhere--"KOOL-FM, KOOL HD1 Phoenix" for
example), or after each set of calls (as in "WXXX Anytown, WXXX HD1
Anytown" which would get you a gold star from the part 73.1201 staff
at Uncle Charlie's shop).

The jingle singers then do "WCBS-FM New York" so the only true legal is
for the analog FM signal. Apparently close enough for government work
however. ;D

Have you checked out the radio dial in Newark and Brooklyn in the past 5 years? Pirate stations outnumber the legal stations and run hundreds of watts. That will tell you how little the FCC could care about 2 missing words from a legal ID.

They actually tried several ways of incorporating the full "WCBS-FM and WCBS-FM HD1 New York" ID before they settled on the way it is now. From my limited knowledge of FCC requirements, I think all you really need to do is identify the analog signal the old-fashioned way while making a mention of HD somewhere around it. So CBS-FM passes the test.

The jingle itself is from the 1992 "Do It Again" package by JAM Creative Productions. I believe the "greatest city in the world" tag line and "New York, New York" snippet were used from around the late 90's/early 00's until fall 2004 (less than a year before Jack). Then of course they resurrected this ID along with CBS-FM itself in July '07. And yes, it's one of my favorites. :)

I think what makes is special is actually the Frank Sinatra "New York, New York" sample which really makes it stand out.

Bill790 ... thank you very much.

The PAMS "Philadelphia Story" was, without a doubt, one of the finest ID packages ever. I cut a package the day after Jay Cook had it delivered from Dallas. Still, a winning package...

Thanks for the memory.

I think the KRTH TOH iD is up there with WCBS-FM. "From the entertainment capital of the world..."

The CBS-FM hour ID is probably my favorite, but the WFIL hour ID from the early 70's has got to rank right up there...http://www.philaradio.com/sound/wfil/Wfilpsid.wav

Even though I grew up listening to WABC back in the 60's and 70's, I picked this as a handful of Philly Story cuts to have re-sung when I was running my webstream. I think the package is still one of the best products PAMS put out as far as being well orchestrated.

For those of you TOH fans of CBS-FM that WVOS-FM out in the Catskills uses the same snippet which is "New York, New York" by Frsnk Sinatra where the Voiceover saying "From the entertainment capitol of the Catskills" instead of the "Greatest city in the world". I prefer the WVOS-FM's TOH a lot better than CBS-FM's.

I remember the TOH jingles by Frank Gari where they sang "101 WCBS-FM New York!". These bring back memories right before the JAM's "Do It Again" package started on many oldies stations across the country including Albany's WKLI which is "Magic 100.9" where they still used the same package than CBS-FM does.

Remember back the 70's where CBS-FM usually had the TOH jingles where they give out the names of the jocks such as "Jack Spector, WCBS-FM, New York!" That was really old back then when I was born when CBS-FM was playing oldies along with the "Future Gold" segments.

BTW, is CBS-FM planning anything special for this Sunday at 1:01pm?

Maybe they'll play Summer Wind. (Hey, it's a joke...chill out!)

"CBS-FM, yesterday...

101, today!"
