cbs-fm

I've heard a Jack jingle on cbs-fm and voice breaks done by a female. does this mean howard cogan the horrible voice of Jack is out or on the way out? get him off the air and Jack's ratings will rise.

not that I want the ratings to rise for JOEL FM! (I mean Jack)

Jack's had jingles for a while now (one or two of the jingles I've also heard on Seattle's Jack) and the "Jacktivity" voice breaks and website breaks have been done by that female as well. As for Howard Cogan, every single Jack FM (even the satellite-fed version) has him except for the one in Buffalo. Only reason he's not there is due to the fact that the Toronto Jack is right across the lake, I guess they don't want listeners confusing the two.. also with the close frequency #s... 92.5 in Toronto and 92.9 in Buffalo.Even Jack stations that DO have jocks (Canada) still have Cogan doing the brief Jack liners.. even simply saying "[frequency] Jack FM, playing what we want" at random times, and leading into/returning from commercial breaks. IMO Cogan is a staple to the Jack format. Ripping him out of it is something that you can't do...especially after having used him to establish the station persona/character for so long. At the very most, just lessen his role as personality at the station. Just keep him around for those random liners and whatnot. I think the Canadian Jacks that have jocks are doing it extremely well. Specifically 96.9 Jack FM in Vancouver... http://www.jackfm.com

I'm not concerned about Jack's in other cities. Here in NYC --- Cogan harms cbs-fm --- and many top radio people agree. other Jack failures here are--- lack of jocks/personality, poor music selection/rotation, poor station promotion, no news/info breaks in drive times. Should I go on? Similar problems plague Wnew, Wfny, Wcbs-am, and even to some degree Wins and Wfan. (but Joel knows best--- for now!)

Cogan would be less harmful if he's used for straight voice work ---- and kill the wise ass comments.

lack of jocks/personality
Ok, I'm not gonna deny it. The lack of personality could very well be the weak point of Jack FM NYC. I wouldn't mind it if they were brought in, I just don't want them to be just like every other station's annoying DJ doing stupid things like on-air contests (I like the way Jack is doing contests now)... I hope the "less talk, more music" aspect of Jack is adhered to. Also, if they bring in a morning show, again, no "morning zoo" or excessive talk like Mix's morning show. It should be more music than talk. Sure, it isn't what OTHER stations are doing.. but since when is Jack FM like any other station?

poor music selection/rotation
I'll give you this one as well. Jack FM NYC plays a bit too much 80s rock, although that HAS lessened quite a bit in the past couple of months. Apparently Brian Thomas is doing something. It's still not perfect, but they're playing different tunes I have not heard on Jack before (I've listened to Jack almost daily since its debut). There is still plenty of room to improve though.

poor station promotion
Maybe it's because I don't live in NYC and I can't see too many billboards or whatever, but last fall at my college, almost every bus had a Jack FM ad on it. Maybe since then they haven't used too many ads. I only saw the Jack FM TV ad once. According to their website, they've done a lot of social events and held some Jack-sponsored concerts. They mention them on air, and on the "Jack's Happy Place/Jack Around Town" section of the site. It seems to me they're doing a good amount of promotion.

no news/info breaks in drive times
Maybe not in PM drive, but in AM drive, they've been doing small 3-4 min "Jack FYI" updates in which they do news, traffic, weather and sports. They do them on the :10s and :40s of every hour from 5-10AM. I approve of these. They're not long, but they work well, and they don't interrupt the flow of music. I wouldn't mind it if they did these throughout the day as well to expand the feel of personality. It's small, and to the point.--------------------------------------------------------Overall, of course there is plenty of room to improve Jack FM. I just don't want the idea of the Jack FM format to be lost in the debut of personalities. The wise-ass comments.. those have been a staple of Jack FM. I'll say though... he's gotten a bit less sarcastic than since when he debuted. I could be wrong being I listen so much and maybe I'm used to it. I'm open to change... as long as it's not drastic or detracts from the overall idea of Jack.

I stand corrected. cbs-fm is airing news/info updates in am drive. I think more fm stations should offer brief updates in both am and pm drive. Radio should be more than a music jukebox. should have personalities and news/info.( There are enough other choices now for those who want music only. )

Not sure if this will clear up the Howard Cogan discussion, but he doesn't write the liners. Each station sends him the thing to say and he just.. well, says it. He just does it in the Jack voice. So the fault doesn't really lie on Cogan, but lies on the stations themselves. They should be less cocky perhaps. I'm not sure whos the Imaging Director for our Jack, but he's the guy who writes the liners. I'm not even sure if WCBS Jack has one of them, but I know others do.

if someone at cbs-fm writes the wise ass material and cogan voices it-- that wise ass crap is killing the station. not only my opinion. I've heard it from many others in NYC radio. the material is bad and so is the delivery by cogan. (listen up cbs-fm suits. )

Can anyone shed any light on this.... John Rook's website is talking about a possible return of oldies to WCBS-FM and AM.... tomorrow. I can't find anymore info about this. Here is the link:http://www.johnrook.com/musicradio[1].WAVThe article below is from John Rook's website at http://www.johnrook.comIs Oldies Returning to New York City ?Bruce, Ron & Dandy Dan...returning ?A mysterious promotional spot is making the rounds saying CBS will return oldies to the dial in New York on June 15th. CBS spokesman deny it will happen but other sources say it will. Could be another case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing, but CBS does have two "all news" stations in New York City with WCBS the least successful of the two. If its a "gag" promo spot, perhaps this will be put to rest via this expose'. The idea may be too good for the rudderless CBS radio brass to accept. The format had “legs” that appealed to many generations of radio listeners until it was “researched” to reach just “the money demo”, where it began to die giving the sales driven CBS brass reason to dump the format in the one big city where “oldies” truly lived. Now having bombed with a jockless Jack format, a total reversal will offer New Yorkers a double whammy of “Oldies” on both WCBS am & fm starting June 15. A promo currently making the rounds, advises a return to the airwaves of radio celebrities who years ago first introduced this music to the Big Apple via WABC. If it comes about, let’s hope the programmers realize the music isn’t limited to the hits that were popular in just the 60’s and that some of the greatest “oldies” with R&B roots from the 50’s are included. It will be interesting to see how many radio stations would rush back to being an "oldies" station if CBS does. The format has great appeal to a giant audience when it isn’t “researched to death.” If true, welcome back Cousin Brucie & friends….jr

...I can't believe they'd be hip enough to orchestrate such an obvious idea, during a time when "american Idol" is dominated by 50s and 60s selections, and Broadway shows like "Jersey Boys" are dominating the headlines, while people remain indifferent to 80s/90s oldies....nah, that would be too smart and make too much sense to be true...

Um, I hate to be the one to burst your bubble on this...but, the gag promo John Rook is talking about is just that: A gag promo. It was done in house years ago with the voices of Bruce Meyerwitz, I mean Morrow and Ron Lundy.Return to your homes. Nothing to see here.

Corporate radio is now run by greedy, tight-ass suits. That's why radio is now as boring as it is--am-fm AND satellite! (the only person to amuse me recently was --- Big Dan!)

if I may correct myself--- corporate radio is now run by small-minded, greedy, tight ass suits!

Radio has always been run by the suits but today's suits are killing the business. I only write here because I have a glimmer of hope radio may improve. (via HD, satellite, internet)

It has been noted radio has been dumbed down. I would say our culture/society in general has been dumbed down for years--- even with the advent of the internet. The reasons? Too complex to go into here--- but very sad indeed.
