Scooty430 Beyond the Sea shows that WCBS is not just Classic Hits......they've still got the Oldies on the air.

Check out the B list on CBS-FM website, quite a few 50's and early 60's and even "BLUE CHRISTMAS" by Elvis in June. About as rare as it gets!

Blueberry Hill, Barefootin', Bread and Butter, Bony Maronie, Bo Diddley, Blue Moon, and yes "Billy Don't Be A Hero"

So much for the "stiffs" theory right??

I assume "Strangers in the Night" (#1 in '66) will be played, when they get to the S's. Maybe "Learnin' the Blues" #1 in 55? Of course, they'll play "New York, New York"!

The 55+ must love this, glad they weren't left out. Great songs will always appeal.

"Bristol Stomp" being aired right now, another classic, followed by "Broken Wings"...gotta love it!

They are throwing a small bone to baby boomers with a few earlier songs but, the bottom line is that this station is a 99.999999999% 1968-1980 music station. People who want a steady diet of 1955-1967 music have no choices on the New York radio dial.

Couple it with some much needed improvements and tweaks to the station's airchain, it's awesome!!!

I wasn't going to say anything, but you're 100% right. What took them so long? Finally I can leave my radio on 101.1 for extended periods of time. It got to the point where I had to switch to WLTW because I couldn't take the audio.

Kudos to the CBS-FM engineering department for making the station sound the way it should. Let's just hope they leave it where it is... Both the music and the airchain are sounding great this morning!

I was surprised last night in the 10:00 hour when the first half hour was comprised of mostly '50's (and some early '60's) hits. From "Blue Monday" to "Bobby's Girl," there were plenty of rock and roll's early hits, including "Blueberry Hill" and "Blue Velvet." Unfortunately, the Mediabase feature is currently down, so the only resource is YES, and they sometimes leave out some songs.

Nevertheless, I was surprised when my alarm was off and they were in the C's. Keep up the great work, CBS-FM!

Yes, they went all night long!

This morning in the 4am hour, I heard "Cherish" by Kool & The Gang (early 80's) into "Cherish" by Madonna (late 80's?).

And if you think this is a daunting task, imagine how long it will take to get through the T's - you know, with all those "The" songs? When WNEW did their A to Z countdown back in 1993, it took them a full day! ;D

Well...the station finally got a very competent engineer who knows what he's doing when it comes to tweaking processors. And he's been busting his ass cleaning that wiring mess up. Lets leave it at that.

It's nice to know that this isn't just some "fluke" and that by next week, the airchain will not be less-than-perfect again. I don't know how the people at the station could have been satisfied with the way it sounded for MONTHS up until the week just before the station moved into its new studios (which is when I noticed the sound REALLY start to turn around).

I'm amazed that in the #1 market, someone could be that poor at their job for so long and get away with it. Ah... whatever. What matters is that right now it sounds 100% better than before the tweaking. And what's even better is that there is a competent person working on the station's sound. Yet another reason to applaud WCBS-FM this week. ;D

I nearly flipped when I read people bitching and moaning about the "A-Z." Boo hoo. So it's not the regular playlist. It's the regular playlist with EXPANDED VARIETY. *Gasp!*

Look at it this way: they're also the kind of people who'd bitch and moan if WCBS referred to Pride Week celebrations, because it's not a lifestyle which "mainstream" listeners can relate to...

And remember. This is *NYC* we're referring to.

and that, folks, is what makes this countdown (and this station) such a GREAT thing - BRAVO 101 FM!!

This is still a small bone for the 55+ audience. There are about 1300 top twenty 1955-1963 hits and another 800 from 1964-1967 not to mention other big 1955-1967 records that did not go top 20. How many are being played.....maybe 100 of them. The 100 just give an illusion, however false, that CBS-FM cares about this era, which is false. But, all you groupies, keep on posting.

By the time they get to Z, they will have played far more than 100 from that era, far more.
The emphasis seems to be late 60's to 1989, but they have played quite a few pre 68's and some 50's.

They are trying to satify all demos, all listeners, with basically four decades of hit songs.

Given what CBS is, I think the notion of its "skewing younger" is a ruse covering up for its actually skewing toward the same-olds who're desperate to not look like washed-up geezers, lest the station get "Jack'd" again. Who also happen to be the sort to blame Jack-i-fied "society" for a 40-year-old son being a ne'er-do-well layabout whose 20-year-old daughter is stripping in order to support her 2-year-old son.

No pleasin' you! Go get XM and listen to the 50's channel. Non-stop 50's/early 60's.

The fact that a major market terrestrial station is playing ANY pre-1964 songs besides Tequila is a minor miracle. Enjoy it while it lasts.

I know I am, and I take particular pleasure hearing, for example, Earth Angel followed by Easy Lover. I'm liking the mix of decades - keeps it fresh. Heck, even the burnt songs like Aerosmith Dream On sound somewhat new in this context!
