CBS-HD Goes Gavel-To-Gavel

Boston Media Guy quoted a report on Broadcasting & Cable.com that announced:

> The CBS O/Os will provide coverage of (Supreme Court) nominee John
> Roberts' (confirmation) hearings (in front of the Senate Judiciary
> Committtee.

And then asked:

> Will local cable companies provide a 'standard' version of
> the HD channel so those without HD converters may view it?

Actually, it won't be HD, but a digital channel of a CBS O&O (or affiliate).

Such coverage will probably be seen only on those systems that normally carry digital sub-channels of CBS-owned (or affiliated) stations.

I would not be surprised if Roberts' testimony is shown on the broadcast networks, but the testimony of other witnesses, whether for or against his being nominated, would appear only on the cable news channels and (in the case of CBS O&O's and some affiliates) digital sub-channels.

Tape it for me, sounds like it will be a hoot! Gimme a break -- what a waste of electricity.

Why bother? That's why they have C-SPAN. All the networks are going to be taking the exact same feed from the hearings anyway; the only difference is in whatever analysis they offer.

Many cable operators already offer the SD subchannels.

For all we know, Judge Roberts or one of the other witnesses may say something that will either result in the judge getting a near-unaminous confirmation in the Senate, or force Judge Roberts to withdraw his name from consideration for the Supreme Court.

Unfortunately, the coverage of the Roberts Confirmation will be on the nearly invisible C-SPAN3 as the House and Senate will be in session on the main two flavors of same. C-SPAN2 will have highlights after the Senate adjourns, however.

It's just the way it is.
