CBS, Here's your chance to launch a Sports Talker!

Finally found out what's going on with the A's and KTRB, From All Access

The OAKLAND ATHLETICS are coming up on the season opener with the team's radio deal for 2011 still up in the air, and the OAKLAND TRIBUNE reports that negotiations for the team to buy flagship Sports KTRB-A (XTRA SPORTS 860)/SAN FRANCISCO out of bankruptcy have hit a "major snag."
The A's have been trying to strike a deal with receiver COMERICA BANK to buy the station but have yet to reach agreement, and the weekend's spring training games did not air on KTRB but streamed on mlb.com instead. A release said that radio broadcasts would resume for the final pre-season series against the cross-BAY rival SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS but the season opener FRIDAY against the SEATTLE MARINERS remains in question.

It sounds like the A's are desprate for a new station, I think this would be a good oppurtunity for CBS to step in and get the A's on either Live 105 or KFRC. Heck, they could even put the A's on Live 105 now and wait for a little bit to flip Live to Sports

How about KYLD or KKSF picking up the A's broadcasts?

Music and baseball on AM can be done with some success yet. It's a two edged sword, however. The station gets a nice cume boost from the games, but irritates their P-1 listeners that want music all the time (and usually the sports and music listeners don't overlap all that much), and advertisers that need to run in both drive times, since PM drive is sucked up by games for a good deal of the time from April through Oct.

I assume you mean "music and baseball on FM" - This was exactly the criticism of 106.9/KFRC. That Classic Hits listeners would tune in and find As baseball, which pissed them off, and sent them to other stations for their music. On the pre-MOViN KFRC, the As games would only run on 610 AM - 99.7 would stick with musick

You assumed incorrectly. I wrote AM and meant AM. I think sports and music on FM on a major market station is a disaster for both ratings and revenue. This is double for baseball, where the music station gives up virtually all spots for 6 hours a day for 6 months. BTW, sports (mainly local) on small market FM stations works fine....a nice tidy chunk of billing. Of course, the station retains control of the spots and sells them in local sports broadcasts.

I remember when Modesto's KHYV-970 (Now KESP) played Classical Music and was an affiliate of the Oakland A's in the 1980's. They advertised as "The Three Classics: Bach, Beethoven and Baseball".
