CBS in trouble

I don't want to get into trouble or upset anyone by posting rankers for the August book that was released today. But I will say that CBS is in serious trouble. After a weak July book, it just got worse for CBS in August. Literally all of their stations (Mix, KLUC, KXTE, KXNT) were down pretty sugnifantely this month in the money demo. Even if you removed Spanish stations, they still aren't even close to having a station in the top 5. KLUC took the biggest hit, especially in morning drive where they were down by 50%.

At the other clusters, Beasley and Lotus should be pretty happy and Clear Channel should be relieved that Sunny recovered from a weak July (although their other brands aren't doing so hot).

CBS stations are generally high quality. But for some reason their stations are ratings challenged in a lot of markets. There are some exceptions such as Detroit where CBS is extremely dominant. Las Vegas has always been a strong CBS market as well. But now this looks like it's changing.

I wonder if this is the first time EVER KLUC has not been in the top 10 6+/12+. I would guess hell yes. Having too many CHRs is taking it's toll on them all. It looks like KVEG also took a huge hit. Like you said KPLV is not doing hot...but just being there is causing misery for everyone in the format. They aren't listed in the trades but I'm curious about KFRH. Are they the #1 top 40 or are they going down along with everyone else?

For years on this board I predicted that if the market ever got a CHR/pop it would hurt KMXB since they were serving as the default mainstream. Now we have at least 2 CHR/pop stations. I would argue 3 since KLUC plays tons of pop music these days. Also KMXB themselves plays more rhythmic pop product than ever (which is the trend nationally for hot AC) so they are on the edge of being in the crowded CHR war.

Look at how good KSOS is doing. This has to be their highest ratings ever. I wouldn't be surprised if they are taking some audience away from MIX. Contemporary Christian sounds more Hot AC to me than anything and I could easily see it attracting the same soccer mom audience KMXB is going after.

How about KOAS? They keep going up each month. Now #3 5.1-5.5. The last I heard they are doing very well in women 25-54. They play a variety of "old school" including slow ballads. I point that out because a lot of stations nationally (including ACs) are afraid of playing slow love songs. KOAS is proof that women will flock to it if it's an option.

That's also why i think KSNE does better than many ACs natonally, they aren't too hard. An AC that's too bright really doesn't stand for anything and can get caught in no mans land.

kluc used to carry the load in that cluster...kxnt verses kkoh up in Reno...what a difference in the audience...is it worth having separate programing on kxnt? maybe a kluc simulcast instead?

I wonder if the fairly widely circulated intent of CBS to exit the smaller markets has had a negative impact on staffing, budgets and overall confidence and dedication?

I monitored the KLUC morning show. They were doing a lot of talking, mostly about the MTV awards. Maybe you just can't get away with talking that much with PPM? I wonder how KFRH with no talk in the morning does vs KLUC?

I was in a business today that had CHR music on. I was curious which station it was. It ended up being none of the struggling local Top 40s. It was Z100/New York!

Washington is another cluster where CBS' radio properties have been mired in a slump. Not one of their stations is regularly even in the Top 10. And their new all-news station, 99.1 WNEW? Tough start!

CBS Las Vegas long time Production Director Ty Sante is no longer with the company. I'm not sure what exactly happened, whether he was terminated or quit. But this is likely an end of year budget cut due to the fact that ratings and revenue are down. I wonder if they're planning more cutbacks before the end of the year. I don't know Ty personallly but I have heard his production skills on the air and he is top notch. What a great voice he has. Hopefully he'll land another gig in Vegas. Just like Clear Channel's massive cutbacks right before Christmas, this CBS move is pretty heartless.

Given how news/talk stations have been migrating toward FM, and virtually all of CBSSR's affiliates are AM stations, wouldn't it be the other way around? And besides, isn't the network already on a CBS-owned AM station in Vegas, the old "Kydz Radio"?

KNBR in SF used to have Limbaugh in the morning and sports the rest of the day..then they went all sports. That would be an option, unless they have to take Hannity as well.

I am suprised Oscar Goodman does not have a little show, maybe they would have to give equal time because of his mayor wife.

Maybe a "retired" mobster with a morning show?

720 would make a great sports/gambling station with their signal.

What is your take (anyone) on the demise of News numbers on so called News/Talk stations.
Beasley threw in the towel after a very expensive debut. KXNT doesn't seem to be kicking ass with their News.
They seem to be doing a good job but does anyone care about News on radio anymore?

Well, if Eliot Spitzer can get a TV show or two... :p

Heard a few long time AE's left last week as well as KLUC's long time production guy.
