CBS Looking for Couric's Replacement

I still maintain CBS would be smart and try to lure Lester Holt away from NBC. He would make a great lead anchor for CBS, which according to a comment from Bernard Goldberg, has lost over three million viewers since Couric was named lead anchor a few years ago.

Bob Schieffer has to be enjoying a good laugh.

Holt would be an excellent choice, and has worked for CBS in the past, as an anchorman for WBBM-TV Chicago before joining NBC.

CBS just has to realize that hiring Katie Cupcake as a serious news anchor was a serious mistake, and probably the dumbest thing a network news operation has done since ABC paired up Harry Reasoner and Baba Wawa.

How about pairing up Connie Chung and Dan rather? That ended rather quickly.

Unless they hire Charlie Sheen, the ratings will continue to dwindle....especially if your affiliates are dismally ranked in the local news hours as your lead-in. The anchor doesn't count anymore. They could plop any correspondent behind the desk and the ratings would perk up here and there, but mostly continue their downward trajectory. ABC and NBC have fewer viewers than 4 years ago too.

I doubt Bob Schieffer is laughing. He has wanted to retire for a decade now. Of course, the Foxies will chortle. Then again, Katie gets more viewers than Fox nearly every single day.

How about John Roberts who went to CNN. He could return to CBS and this time be the lead anchor if he is available for a contract.

He's now a general assignment reporter for FNC, based out of Atlanta so he could be with his hoochie and lovechild. Plus, he's about two decades too old. If CBS does get someone new, they should pick a 30-something. They work cheap at that age and imagine what CBS News could do with an extra $10-$14M a year.

Forgot about that debacle, mostly because I've only rarely watched The CBS Evening News since Uncle Walter retired.

Since when does CBS News hire anyone younger than 45 as lead anchor? Not since 1962, when Uncle Walter became anchor at that age. Kenneth Dan was 49 when he took over, as was Katie. Douglas Edwards was 31 when he anchored the first CBS network newscast in 1948, but that was a different era when radio commanded the more-experienced guys. CBS News, even more-so than the entire network, caters to old folks. Of course, the antiquated network news model skews old (read: 55 to room temperature) on NBC and ABC as well.

Lester Holt is 52. John Roberts is 54. Both are just the right age to be a CBS News anchor, but still 20 years too young for 60 Minutes. ;D

I thought he became the head SCOTUS guy. ;)

And you can forget about CBS trying again to recruit Peter Mansbridge, because it's election time right now in Canada; they're headed to the polls on May 2...a MONDAY, which means that Canadian "Dancing With The Stars" fans may have to watch their show from the U.S. stations as CBC, CTV, and Global will all have election night coverage!

Hey, what about Kevin Newman (former Global National anchor)?

Actually I suspect that if they do make an anchor change, Russ Mitchell has the inside edge. He was recently bounced to weekends when the Weekday Early Show went hip and trendy and 30something. If they feel the need for geezer-friendly, the 51-year-old AA would fit nicely. If they decide to go Full Geezer, Harry Smith would do nicely (although I suspect we are more likely to see him head to Face The Nation).

If they were bold and smart, they would plop 35-year-old Erica Hill into the slot. She has filled in for Katie a few times and demonstrated the ability to "go live and breaking news" on CNN in her past life.

Of course, as noted before, it really doesn't matter. Only Charlie Sheen would bring new eyeballs to a slowly-dying news program.
