CBS makes a decision

The station has its critics, but its life span as a music station is nearly over as Dave FM will force changes at both 680 and 790 when it flips to Sports in Sept following in the footsteps of CBS sports FM's in Boston, Detroit, Dallas, and most recently Tampa.
Seeing Cumulus has the new sports net, will be interesting if 92 9 becomes an ESPN affiliate.

Personally, I don't think sports in Atlanta is a good decision for CBS. As you say, CBS has FM sports stations in Detroit, Boston and Dallas, and also Philly and Baltimore. But I don't think Atlanta is the same in terms of rabid sports fans as any of those markets. Sports stations do have the advantage of there being certain advertisers who run to them. Categories such as beer and certain cars want the pure audience of sports stations.
 
It’s seems that many sources are in line with your statement Artie. I heard the same thing that September they’ll flip to sports. Any speculation/predictions on what will happen to the current on air staff? I’m thinking that the Atlanta market is already saturated with a boat load of solid talent. It could be a tough time for some.

Rodney, I think you’re right too. I don’t think this is the right direction/decision for CBS in Atlanta.
 
Interesting move, wonder if they will follow CBS' other FM sports stations with local talk. Does 106.7 still have Georgia Tech's FM broadcasts with the change to All News? Could be a quick local play-by-play pick-up for CBS. The Hawks may also be an option.

This will definitely force 790 to scramble for some sort of FM signal (unless most of 92.9's hosts end up coming from 790) and 680 may be pushed to 100.5. As a sports fan living outside the perimeter, I don't mind that at all!

Still leaves ESPN on the outside looking in if 680 dumps them and 92.9 doesn't pick them up. 790 may be where ESPN lands if they follow the model LF has for 790 The Ticket in Miami (Clear Channel's 940 WINZ carries the ESPN morning show). Let another (daytime?) station carry most ESPN's lineup (like 1100 AM) with 790 carrying some weekend, overnight, and play-by-play ESPN programming.

I somewhat tend to agree. Over time, I think the future of FM radio will either be a combination of national simulcast "superstations" for music where say for example KISS 102.7 from LA is simulcast in many markets under a generic Kiss-FM brand. And a few scattered local music stations and then much more focus on local news and information.

I still think Cumulus' long term plan with 106.7 is to create a low budget national news network they can simulcast to other markets and then set up small local news bureaus.

Seems kind of a shame to have one of Atlanta's best FM signals at 92.9 get wasted on sports, which probably isn't going to pull much in the way of ratings.
 
One thought is CBS might buy the intellectual rights to 790 which would give them most of a ready made station.

Does CBS carry ESPN on any of their other FM sports stations?

Heck, could CBS buy the two ATL LFM stations outright? There aren't that many buyers for them (Cox is maxed out, Cumulus would have to divest one of the Dickey throwaway AMs, Radio One is probably not interested, CC ATL couldn't count their butt cheeks with both hands and get the same answer twice).

The Zone moves to 92.9, and 790 becomes...wait for it...Classic Hits "Quixie In Dixie"!
 
If this did happen (sports on 92.9, potential WCNN simulcast on 100.5), Atlanta will have even less musical variety on the dial outside of Urban - notably in the rock field. Would leave just Project (Active rock), River (lite classic rock), and 99X's (Alternative) limited signal.

Forget ratings. Looks likes its all billings - especially if they can sell the markets as a package. Atlanta deserves to be more than a number.
 
I thought sports has always been about billings and not about ratings. Sports always have low ratings, but have almost 100% in a target male market which is very appealing to certain advertisers.
 
100.5 should quickly go sports.
Regular Guys in the morning, sports guys all day long.
They already have The Braves so that's a good fit as well.
CBS should then utilize their strong classic hits model and go that way with Dave.

The Dickey family owns 680 not Cumulus. I realize there is a revenue slit for the Braves but the rest of the money (and there is a surprising amount) goes directly to the Dickey family. Why "share" all the revenue with Cumulus? 680 's FM translator covers a lot of the market.

Not all of them. WXYT/Detroit is always a contender for #1 in the market (#2 in the most recent book). WBZ/Boston gets strong ratings considering it's up against a more established competitor, also on FM now. KDKA/Pittsburgh was inching towards top 10 (6+) with no play-by-plays until getting the Pirates this season. CBS knows what they're doing with sports and we'll see how they do with a weak sports market (ATL).

It would still be a smart move for Cumulus to try and head off a CBS sportstalker by playing with their (well, Dickey's) three sportstalkers and upgrading one of them to 100.5 (and another to 680/93.7). Keep Rude on 680 and TRG on 100.5. The Dickeys can work out the numbers and revenue split. This would also provide a logical home for Tech sports if they don't want to keep them on 106.7.

And, yes, bring back classic hits on 92.9 as "Atlanta's Classic Hit Radio Z-93".

Then Cumulus can put TOC on 97.9.
