CBS may buy KPNX-TV

I hear the rumors that Gannett might sale TV station in the future.

CBS or someone else might be a buyer for KPNX-TV Channel 12.

Really? Cause I heard they might be moving to Seattle. They've dominated Phoenix for so long, they want to move up in competition. ;)

If CBS were to come to town to open an O&O, my money is on either KPHO or KTVK.
KPNX brand breathes NBC.
Imagine the rebranding involved.
Gannett is NBC friendly.

I did hear in the mid-late 80's, CBS wanted to buy KPHO, but Meredith wanted up and CBS was offering down.
17-20 years later, who's to say it couldn't happen again?

I've got to give it to Phoenix in the "variety of newscasts" department:

KTVK -- very quirky, local, and somehow likable.
KPNX -- dominant, authoritative
KPHO -- up and coming, live, Kent Dana
FOX10 -- fast, typically Fox, Dave Munsey
ABC15 -- tabloid, tabloid, tabloid

Not very many cities (not even Seattle) can touch this. I was telling a friend in the tv biz in Seattle about KTVK. He said that it sounded a lot more fun than his current gig.

More likely NBC would buy KPNX (and maybe KUSA in Denver)...12 has been with NBC since it went on the air as KVAR.
Gannettoon would rather dump the sinking ship called the AZ Republic than sell 12 (and may have to because of the FCC temporary extension on allowing cross-ownership expiring)

Actually, they went on the air as KTYL-TV, but I know I'm being nitpicky. ;D

My bet is that they'll sell the Repulsive within a couple of years. I'll be surprised if the FCC extends the cross-ownership rules or that Congress will even let them if they try.

The O.P. is known for nonsense posts - truth is optional.

This isn't the first time I have noticed he's done KPNX(or KPHO for that matter) becoming a CBS O&O post.

Although I wonder, who is most likely to become Phoenix's next O&O? KNXV possibly? Or shall Phoenix remain the same. While I'm in speculation mode, CBS did sell off smaller O&Os like KEYE and WFRV recently, as they were right at the 39% cap. So I'm wondering if the sale to get away from the cap was so they could buy something else...like in a growing market like Phoenix perhaps? Again, just pure speculation, and I don't even know if they sold enough room to even actually make a stake(someone would have to do the math). Like desertskies said earlier, who knows?

I have a bridge to sell you, too! (I think it's over in western Arizona somewhere).

Ooh, that wouldn't be London Bridge at Lake Havasu City would it? Be nice to have something in an oasis in that town instead of having something in dinky outposts like Kingman, Parker, and/or Bisbee. Speaking of which, I once took a tour of George Strait's ocean front property there at Yuma "Beach" :D ;D

Joining you in serious mode for a second, I honestly don't see any affiliate here going O&O. The station most likely to would be KPNX, if Congress won't allow the cross-ownership to continue (likely) and they choose to keep the Republic over KPNX (not likely). I don't see Scripps giving up KNXV, although it would be ironic if they did, seeing how they forced ABC to dump their longtime affiliation with VHF KTVK in favor of UHF KNXV in 1994. And I don't see Meredith giving up a rising star like KPHO, unless CBS makes them an offer they absolutely cannot refuse.

I'd rather see affiliates own the stations; I hate having the networks dictate which programs air and when, shoving New York or Los Angeles community standards down our throats.

That's what I figured. Yes it would be funny if Scripps had to lose KNXV to ABC considering how Scripps blackmailed ABC with WXYZ and having all Scripps stations become ABC. Thing is, neither have been able to have the last laugh.

Finally, I agree with you that local/smaller company ownership is ALWAYS better than O&O, even if its a good O&O station.

Actually, Scripps unloading KNXV is not too far fetched. Last year the Scripps CEO made it clear in an investors meeting that their long-term plans do not include network TV . Other than their newspapers (a real problem right now for everyone), their TV station holdings are the weakest part of the overall portfolio, and KNXV is about the weakest performer they have. Scripps would rather concentrate on cable and the web.

On the other hand, I don't know who would buy KNXV if they did make that decision.

I don't see ABC jumping at that one, but you never know.
