cbs new york's website

Original post refers to the newly rolled out (beta for now; official next week) CBS Local New York website which will put WCBS-TV Channel 2, WCBS-AM, WINS-AM & WFAN-AM under one umbrella. There's no effect on the sites of WXRK-FM (92.3 Now), WCBS-FM and WWFS-FM (Fresh 102.7). Stories will be credited to the contributing station.

Saw it today, looks spiffy, banding together the news/sports resources of the cluster.

why did they do this? is it cheaper? easier?

Yes, and yes. It's also logical. CBS-AM and WFAN's individual websites didn't generate nearly as much traffic as you would think. Try selling that. Combined = higher views, and more breadth of information, CNS news video etc. Do you really think the average person who wanted NYC news or the Yankee game score was running to a radio station website? amidst the plethora of options online?

All stations have this issue now, what really is attracting your listeners to your site (OTHER than streaming online)? How much original content is really out there? Most stations are just RSS feeds of something else. Sure there are a few elements every now and then...but for the most part generic.

WCBS's site is the best for traffic information. If an accident happens on a small residential street in the suburbs, it's going to be listed there.

I remember WCBS news reporting one time either an accident or roadwork closing the "lawrence st" bridge in rahway NJ during several traffic reports talk about Small streets. They made it sound major.
