CBS News Radio "Dissolved"

There are mass layoffs underway at CBS News. Among them is the entire workforce of CBS News Radio.

In a meeting with Bari Weiss, the employees were told the entire radio is being "dissolved" and that their last broadcast day will be May 22. May 23rd would be most people's final day on the job.

That's interesting, since they just signed a new syndication distribution deal with Audacy.

However, here is reporting on the story:

However, here is reporting on the story:

We need to see how Audacy responds to the shutdown of CBS News Radio and where does their all-news stations go in May like KNX, KCBS, WINS, KYW and WBBM goes.

There is a more in depth discussion taking place on the General Radio Topics board, and threads on the impact to Audacy's stations in Chicago (WBBM), San Francisco (KCBS), and Boston (WBZ) on those market's boards.

Here is Audacy notifying their local stations that their all-news stations will still be on the air after May 22nd when CBS News Radio Shuts down. Affiliation change is yet to be seen.

Note WTOP one of the largest stations not owned by Audacy has switched affiliations from CBS Radio to ABC News Radio.

WTOP, one of the largest stations not owned by Audacy, has switched affiliations from CBS Radio to ABC News Radio.

It’s not the first time…

From January 3, 2018:

After 80 Plus Years, WTOP Switches to ABC News

As of January 1st, ABC News Radio became the primary news source for WTOP. This station will run hourly network newscasts, updates at 30:30 and will be users of ABC news’ crisis coverage, ABC Newscall, correspondent two-ways and ABC News Digital at WTOP.com.

It lasted two yesrs.

From January 1, 2020:

CBS News Radio Returns To WTOP Washington

After severing its ties with CBS News at the end of 2017, Hubbard News 103.5 WTOP-FM Washington DC and simulcasters 103.9 WTLP Braddock Heights/Frederick MD and 107.7 WWWT-FM Manassas VA has restored its affiliation with the network.

Here is more on the tributes to the soon to be former CBS Radio News.

For recording purposes, can anyone confirm that the last TOH CBS newscast will be at 11 pm (ET) May 22. Will west coast affiliates receive the final newscast at 8 pm (PT), then?

The TOH newscasts are live to all time zones, so yes, the final TOH newscast will be at 11 PM ET/8 PM PT - but there will also be one final BOH update at 11:31 ET/8:31 PT.

Something to think about: some stations break away at the first 3 minute point in the 'cast. *IF* the final signoff happens in that back minute, if the first segment remains totally a newscast and if a station doesn't make an exception to the 3:00 breakaway, then their listeners (and anyone taping) are likely to be disappointed.

Two affiliates that air the full TOH CBS News every hour of the day and night are KDTH Dubuque, IA and WJEJ Hagerstown, MD. However, The Audacy all news outlets are the only ones I know of that carry the BOH at night.

KCBS used to carry the full five minute newscast overnight, but since they and KNX got merged into a joint production ("Nightwatch"), they're only carrying the first three minutes, much like they do the rest of the day.

Here are more CBS News Airchecks as CBS Radio News shuts down.

I'm also wondering just how many affiliates will still be around come Friday. Today, I received an email from Tim Lary, the news/sports director for KDTH, stating that their last CBS newscast will be at 11 pm Wednesday night, due to changes that need to be implemented to the programming clock, and other details.
