" CBS has offered Ms. Couric about $15 million a year to take over Dan Rather's anchor chair at the 30-minute "Evening News" and to contribute to "60 Minutes," according to people familiar with the situation. NBC, which pays Ms. Couric north of $16 million a year to host the three-hour "Today" show, has offered a raise and other perks, such as specials. Despite the lower paycheck, the CBS anchor job is more prestigious, and it would be less onerous than the marathon "Today" broadcast, where her duties require her to get up before dawn."

The salary CBS reportedly is offering Couric gives NBC the better bargaining chip to say to Couric’s agent, “we are currently paying your client more money than the competition; so do you really want her to work for a company who won’t even match what she is making now”?

Reading the WSJ article I believe that Couric and Lauer have been talking and that Couric’s decision will be based, in part, on what Lauer’s plans are. Should Lauer indicate that he wants to remain at NBC, Couric just might stay with the “Today Show”. If Lauer hints that he wants to bail, then Couric may think the hell with this, and jump to CBS.

This is a nitpick, but how is it that people manage to misspell Katie Couric's name, even when they have the thread subject for reference?
______________

Never mind Katie..............

CBS should give Bob Schieffer his own personel medical staff and keep

him on the air as long as he is breathing.

As much as I don't like David Gregory, I must admit that David and Katie make a very good team. She seems very relaxed when David subs for Matt. The chemistry between the two is excellent, better than with Matt and much better than Lester.

Has CBS considered Lester Holt? He's a very good anchor and interviewer. Seems to be very objective rather than obviously biased.

You're absolutely right. Both he and NBC Weekend anchor John Siegenthaler are excellent and would be great for CBS after Katie turns them down.

Hear, hear! He's done a great job, bringing up the ratings and
making people feel almost as comfortable with him as they were
with Cronkite.
