CBS Picking Up The New Version Of Hawaii Five-O

Power Of Radio said:
I can't remember where I read the article. But a devoted fan of the original series. Purchased Steve McGarrett's 1974 Black Mercury after the show
wrapped in 1980. It was an interesting article. When Five-O ended. Magnum PI was starting up its production. And the car just sat around
collecting dust. Until this guy (fan) started looking for it. And ultimately purchased it.

Here's that article you were talking about...

By now, we all know I was wrong - they are re-casting the parts of McGarrett and Dan-O. I think that's a mistake. Viewers will be thinking of Jack Lord and James MacArthur.

I would have treated the old show as Five-0 history, and cast the actors in new parts - perhaps have the script make mention of the great McGarrett from time to time. Maybe have his (Lord's) portrait in Five-0 headquarters as a past hero of the agency...or something.

The previous show tie-in's are probably only relative to those few people (as a percentage of current TV viewers) who remember it (or anyone born before 1950 or so). The vast majority of current viewers wouldn't miss the flashback reminders. It would make for some very interesting "inside" writing though (assuming the writers are old enough to appreciate the show's history).

Yes, McGarrett and Danno are so iconic, the attempt to recast is definitely a mistake.
They should have followed the "Star Trek Next Generation" model and made references to
the original series (perhaps even with James MacArthur making a guest spot or two)

I just watched the new intro & preview. My thoughts on the intro. I like how they kept the opening shot of the new McGarrett standing
on the balcony of the building. They did seem to keep a majority of the shots(airplane engine, dancing girl, flashing blue light) from
the original, mixed in with the new. They just need to let the new theme be a few seconds longer.

Now the preview was okay. They need to get the 'right' car for McGarrett though. In my opinion a Ford Mustang is not the right
vehicle, for a top law enforcement agent(McGarrett) to drive as his regular vehicle. Others maybe. Not McGarrett. Maybe the
new redesigned Taurus SHO would work? If Ford doesn't object, to seeing 'older' models of its vehicles used. Perhaps
a 2004-05 Mercury Maurader?

Seeing the new McGarrett is fixing up the 1974 Mercury. Hopefully as/if the show progresses. That car gets some screen time
as well. From the pictures I've seen of the 1974 Mercury. The interior needs a complete restoration. And getting its original
hubcaps back. Replacing those tacky & very wrong 1977 Ford Ltd Landau mags. Would be a very nice touch!

on the plus side, I supposse this means that the original will soon be resurfacing someplace other than the Internet

Well, there were like six or seven different actors portraying James Bond, and that franchise isn't necessarily tarnished...

I once heard a famous critic (think it may have been Gene Siskel, I don't quite remember, this was about 20 years ago) who was asked to name the greatest actor then in vogue. He thought for a moment, and then replied "Roger Moore....because he has taken over a part that was initially made famous by another actor, and has almost made you forget the first one".

Not impossible some other actor could make his mark as McGarrett then. But I think those are very long odds.

I have never heard Jack Lord mentioned in the same breath as Sean Connery. Nor have I seen Lord in anything other than Hawaii-5-0 as a leading actor. Connery created a film version of a book character and gave him virtually all of his personality and it was good enough to create a franchise. Lord played a much more run-of-the-mill cop and a pretty wooden one at that. I've often compared Lord to Robert Stack in the stiff manner in which they portrayed their characters.

I think the real question is will this be the last chance for Alex O'Loughlin on CBS? This will be his third starring role (Moonlight and Three Rivers) for the network. If Hawaii Five-O doesn't make it, will CBS cast him again as the main actor?

I didn't see his movie The Back Up Plan with Jennifer Lopez and I don't know how he was received in that role. O'Loughlin might be better off in a TV program where he isn't front and center.

Don't know if you can blame him for Three Rivers. That seemed to me one of the most poorly constructed, highly disjointed
television programs of all time.

As a loyal fan of the original, this is NOT good news. In my view they can only screw it up (much as Hollywood does every time they mangle old shows I used to like before bringing them to the big screen).

I bet not even the theme song survives in a recognizable form. The fact that they've chosen a female to play Kono is your first give away. Wo Fat will be on Nutrisystem and no longer Chinese. And I don't even want to think about what they're going to do to McGarrett.

I can't understand people who lob lame complaints like this. Not every remake or re-imagination of a past piece of work needs to maintain some 'magical reverence' to the original. These people are still gripping that today's Dodge Charger dares to have four doors.

You liked the original show? Fine, watch those reruns. Truth is, this new version likely isn't targeted at you anyway. The new 5-0 will survive on being a well watched and interesting show for GenXers, and no amount of nostalgia will likely make it anymore watchable.

The viewers CBS wants likely won't know or care who those two actors are. ::)

Not if my GenX'ers are any indication. Unless it looks something like '24' or maybe NCIS they will not be watching. They watch very little TV and are very selective in what they watch. I don't see the old Hawaii 5-0 formula working at all with them. Their TV hero's tend to be much more like Jack Bauer than Steve McGarrett.

For one, James MacArthur is still alive at age 72.

And if you're wondering, the producers does plan to awknowlege the new Steve McGarrett as the son of the original and the new Chin Ho Kelly as the original's protege.

"Chin Ho Kelly"? Not a nice name. Times have changed.

Lotta people named Chin Ho, Chen Ho, and similar variations. I had a karate instructor who went by that name.

FWIW, I will give the new H-5-0 a look for two reasons that probably won't make much sense: One, I love the TV Tunes channel on Spinner/AOL Radio--that theme might be one of the best ever crafted. And two, Daniel Dae Kim is in it; almost much every show that's involved a significant Lost cast member I've given a shot, from the update of V (Elizabeth Mitchell) to The Unusuals (Harold Perrineau).

To recap: My intrigue in this new CBS show has been piqued by an internet radio channel and the like of one non-related sci-fi/fantasy show that just ended two weeks ago. I doubt I'll be the only one tuning in with few preconceptions of what it 'should' be.
