CBS Picking Up The New Version Of Hawaii Five-O

You liked the original show? Fine, watch those reruns. Truth is, this new version likely isn't targeted at you anyway. The new 5-0 will survive on being a well watched and interesting show for GenXers, and no amount of nostalgia will likely make it anymore watchable.

Not if my GenX'ers are any indication. Unless it looks something like '24' or maybe NCIS they will not be watching. They watch very little TV and are very selective in what they watch. I don't see the old Hawaii 5-0 formula working at all with them. Their TV hero's tend to be much more like Jack Bauer than Steve McGarrett.

And then there is no purpose to re-using the title except to hook old fogies like me.
If they only wanted GenX'ers they'd come up with a whole new concept like "Anime Bikini Babes in Space"
or "Facebook Cyber-Warriors 2.0". But no, they re-use a popular old show title to hook older viewers
and then drive us away because it bears no resemblance to the original.

Again, Star Trek TNG wrote the book on how to do this. It was definitely different than the original,
geared to a younger audience, but done in such a way that it would still appeal to fans of the original.

Problem is, the "they watch very little TV" line is demonstrably false. Look at any significant viewing study--the "gen X" age bracket watches plenty, plenty of TV (and by TV I mean on their TV sets; they, like gen Y and millenials, watch a good amount of TV or other video online, but that is in addition to watching more 'traditional' TV than ever in terms of hours per capita.

As such, the tastes run far wider than just NCIS (which skews to the upper end of x-ers and into younger boomers) and 24. "Formulas" of all type have worked--it's not just the formula, it's the execution and other factors.

Indded, and I sincerely regret reading over it. They're one set of Gen Xers, but not indicitave of all (the beauty is, no one subset is).
