CBS RADIO LAYOFFS

Layoffs again at CBS Radio...

KHTK Sports 1140 morning sidekick F-P SANTANGELO was among the victims of budget cuts. At least four others...

Layoffs too today at CBS operations in Atlanta and Phoenix.

ALL ACCESS adds details, which continue "The CBS Holiday Spirit":

"SANTANGELO's co-hosts WHITEY GLEASON and "THE PHANTOM" will continue in the morning slot. In addition, ALL ACCESS hears that Assistant Production Manager SHAWN EIFERTSEN has exited, and Country KNCI morning traffic reporter JULIE RYAN has been changed to part-time status; receptionist DAWN ACERBIS has also switched to part-time status and will move to another building in the SACRAMENTO cluster; and KNCI night host KODIAK adds production duties."

My sources tell me there could be more cuts reported soon.....revenues are just not there, and holiday buys are way down, along with cancellations.....

Holy crap! Shawn has been there for years! I didn't see this one coming... although I'm not exactly up close and personal with that building anymore.

By the way, why was Julie Ryan full-time to begin with? Did she do something other than morning traffic or did Pat use his influence to help a friend? Not trying to knock her, just curious.

I suspect the axe may be falling our way again, too. Good luck, all my radio collegues.

In this climate, and it should have been the case even before, you have to be able to do more than 1 job...on air AND program, or on-air and run production. If you only have 1 responsibility, you will be out, no matter your tenure...or "twentyyer" as the old sports mal prop goes...

So you better be able to multi-task...

Suze Orman gets to dispense the advice that Financial planners actually sit down and and get their hands dirty implementing the plan for clients.

And that article deals with people WHO ARE NOT EFFICIENT managing their time, that is much different than being paid to do 1 job, especially in our industry where most jobs could be shared and/or combined..resulting in less manpower, but possibly more pay for an individual performing in more than 1 role. That is why I have said that off air PD's on the FM side (doing music) is a major waste...one can still program, do show, and fill the role if they are smart with their time and schedule

Sorry, the world of the single task/job employee is gone...and if perfection was a result of singular focus, then we wouldn't be complaining about $77/hour auto workers turning that "magic bolt", making "perfectly" unwanted vehicles. But what the hell do I know, I can and have done more than 1 job, most parents and parents who work do.

The idea of specialists in the media field is the the real myth. Unless you are a big name host/talent, then no one can afford not to be able to do more than their primary job...

Suze Orman, a prominent business author, once said that multitasking is "the absolute ruination of the perfection of a project."

"...prominent business author..." ?! You're kidding, right? This is a woman who tells viewers that paying above sticker for a new American-label car, that will depreciate 30% the instant you sign the papers, is a good "investment". On the personal side, she claims to be a "lesbian" and a "virgin". The chick has issues. Maybe the Fed has been following her advice? That could explain a lot!

Wow, Shawn is a great guy, and lots of fun to work with. I can't believe they blew him out. But they've been downsizing continuously for the last few months. They are bringing in people that they can pay less than the ones that they're getting rid of. I know kuz I was one of them. Can you say $10 an hour. Friggn folks at McD's make more than that. I saw that KSFM's prod department is handling Phoenix (!!) now, so this may be the next thing for them. Watch your back Tory!

I've e-mailed back & forth with my last remaining pal at CBS Corporate today....his view is this: after a wide swath of cuts around the country, within a couple of months, even more cuts and consolidations will HAVE to take place....HAVE to. Practically everywhere, including more absolute shockers.

Forecasts are grim for the financials into 2010, and biggest of bigwigs are pressuring for bloodletting. Even station shutoffs or fire sales are being discussed, because the general view is there is anywhere for minimal to absolutely no profits being forecast, and losses are showing up in what were recently very profitable clusters around the country.

Maybe this will be Localism's open door....if anyone can cough up the cash and be financed enough to survive rough sledding for several quarters.

Can't confirm this but just heard that Monica Lowe and night guy Lil C are gone from the Zone as a few hours ago. And Tory Welch too.

If true, there's not much KZZO air-talent remaining compared to just 6 short months ago...

It appears, as of 5:15 pm PST, that CBS has not updated the Zone website in some time:
http://www.radiozone.com/pages/1375320.php

Two of those four weekenders on that page have not been heard in some time, either.
We'll hafta keep an eye on this site...

It's been confirmed. They are out. 14 people in all today were let go from both Commerce and Madison Ave. I was also told that middays are going to be tracked, and Bueno is going to be blown out eventually to make way for something syndicated. So that leaves Keith, but he's pretty good buddies with Byron Kennedy who is calling all the shots, so that explains that one for those of you who are curious.

And, nearly an hour later, at 6:12 p.m. PST, the Radio Zone DJ page has reflected the changes
S5C mentioned - Monica and Lil' C's pix are gone, though the weekenders pic still needs change:

Syndicated mornings likely, eh? Wonder who that could be...

just checked it , looks like they updated stuff... alecia b (formerly from 1079 the end) is on there now, is she replacing
monica???
i hope so. better to have a familiar sac voice on there to replace someone like monica. although, i think they shoulda kept her...

The problem is that Mr. Redstone owner of CBS and Viacom has to come up with $800 Million Dollars by December 19, 2008 or refinance the debt. Refinance the debt in this market? So watch out the lights just might be going out in a lot of markets! This is not an imagined problem and the suits are sweating bullets over it to say the very least! So get your heads out of the sand and start making plans to make a new plan.
(If you work for CBS cause its the likely sell off target) The sky just might be falling a lot sooner than you all think and I want you all to not get slayed in this process. May God Bless...
