CBS Radio News

I know CBS offers a 3-min TOH cast with 1 min adjacent inventory and a fourth minute of news after that, but I've heard on more prominent stations like KIRO and WKRC (I think) an update from them at the bottom of the hour. Seems like a one-minute deal. I thought CBS affiliates typically took CNN for BOH casts; does CBS indeed offer a status report at :30, and is it cleared with the network?

CBS offers a regularly scheduled :31 Update from 5:30a-9:30p E. AP Radio offers a similar service: an hourly, :31 single-story update and a :55 headline set.
In the interest of full disclosure: I used to work at CBS, now I'm at AP.

I'm pretty sure that since you left, CBS expanded the :31 update to 24/7.

That's correct. CBS Radio has a minute-long news update aired at the bottom of the hour, or whenever the affiliate feels like it.

And since we're all about full disclosure: I work for CBS, albeit as a freelance reporter. Whee.

I work for the network too. I've been on the staff since 1978 and yes, the 31's are now 24/7 and run one minute with no commercial inventory attached. >

Can you explain why I've heard the Roundup
on a Pacific time zone station at 5:00am PT
(instead of 7:00), and have heard a Mountain
time zone station carry the alternate TOH
'cast at 6:00am MT instead of the Roundup feed?

Does it not matter as long as the station
carries either TOH feed live, and runs the
spots either there or elsewhere in the
prescribed hour?

Is it fed dry, or is there a sounder on top of it?

No sounder.

starts with "CBS NEWS UPDATE I'M..."

ends the same way.

The CBS network news airs on 3 time zone channels. Unfortunately many stations have access to more channels than they should. If a western station aired the roundup at 5 it's because they had their receiver set to channel 36 (east coast feed) instead of channel 38 (Pac). Some stations out west have made arrangements with affiliate relations to do just that. By doing this they also receive the 3 features hours early.

The updates are dry, but I've discovered they're timed such that you could stick a 0:30 bed under it if your station airs it later. CBS has a few music beds on their feed site that I guess affiliates can use.

The idea I got at the time is that CBS was getting pressure from its affiliates to do this, as ABC had already done so with its :30:30 status reports...turned them into 24/7 BOH headlines.

At the time, I was working for a CBS affiliate that'd already been talking with ABC about becoming an Info affiliate...which happened shortly after I arrived.

Another twist--this morning I heard a Central time zone
affil running the alternate TOH at 7:00am CT rather than
the Roundup, whereas the last time I did the dial-around
comparison (March 2005) this station ran the Roundup.
