CBS Radio on iPhone

Just updated to iPhone 2.0 on my exisiting iPhone and downloaded the free CBS radio app. Very nice job, CBS. The interface and graphics look very nice, the operation is smooth and the sound quality very good (so far over wi-fi). This is the pocket transistor radio of the future. Glad CBS embraced it. Imagine, if you're a WCBS F fan instead of K-EARTH, you can listen to it anywhere.

This was one of the first apps I downloaded this morning and I agree, it is very impressive. Good interface. Good audio quality. It even works reasonably well over the slow AT&T EDGE network.

I'm interested to see how well the new 3G model works while driving down the freeway. I'll report back tomorrow after I pick one up and do some testing.

One correction though, it is not actually CBS Radio, it is AOL Radio and CBS just gets to piggyback courtesy of their new partnership.

Also has XM, so the heat is on....

Actually, XM is a separate application (which doesn't seem to have been released yet). Sirius supposedly has one coming too.

An important distinction should be made though. This AOL Radio application for iPhone is free and the radio stations are free, including almost 200 from AOL, which at the moment are commercial-free.

Yes, you're correct war, it is AOL Radio and it is free. As a Howard Stern fan and Sirius subscriber, I hope that the Sirius app comes soon. I never bought a Sirius portable, based on my experience with their original radios, their built like crap (excuse me) and sat reception is dicey (to put it kindly) in the LA region. OTOH, this the the beginning of an open playing field where anyone can be a broadcaster to any where in the world (yes I know there were other phones that did this already, but the iPhone will bring it mass popularity.

I've already sent an e.mail to apple asking why I can't upload the new iPhone applications to my iPhone (it still says that I have the latest upgrade 1.4.1), but I thought maybe someone here could answer my question. Is anyone else having the same issue?

This is a little off-topic, but let me try to help you.

First you need to make sure that you have iTunes 7.7 installed (it just came out today).

Next, to get the app store (and then the apps like AOL Radio) your iPhone needs to be running the 2.0 software. It is technically not released until tomorrow, but you just have to know where to look. Like: http://ageekspot.wordpress.com/2008/07/10/iphone-20-firmware-5a347-available-early/

Once installed you can go to the app store on your iPhone or on iTunes with some of the links from the following site: http://www.macrumors.com/2008/07/10/apps-available-for-download-on-itunes/

Or you can just wait until tomorrow when everything goes live officially.

I hope that helps.

Thank you very much WAR. Knowing that the2.0 not officially available helps. I kept reading comments about people enjoying the AOL Radio, etc... and wondering why my iPhone was not able to update yet...eventhough I just upgraded the iTunes this afternoon.

Again...thank you!

Maverick

So if you can hear WCBS in LA over the iPhone/AOL Radio, will they credit from the PPM in NY? or any credit at all?

This is a little off-topic.

Apple has announced there there is a continued software issue...

I didn't read the whole story but it's out today.

There were issues here in Dallas (and all over) with in-store activation. They were apparently not prepared for the influx of activations (I do not know how not). I tried it again when I got back home and it connected no problem.

I think it is mostly worked out now.
