CBS Radio To Purchase 107.9 FM, Challenge WTOP

Early this morning, WFSI appeared to be simulcasting El Zol 99.1.

Update: Over the weekend, 99.1 had broke away from their simulcast of 107.9, looping a message informing listeners to switch to 107.9.

As of this morning, 99.1 is now 1) WNEW-FM; 2) playing Christmas music.

Anyone know if they're streaming yet?

That's probably because the link you're using is now for 107.9, which is running the Spanish-language programming. I don't know if 99.1 is streaming right now or not.

DCRTV says Amy Morris, who was with WTOP and most recently WFED, will be joining the new FM news outlet at 99.1 FM.

It would be a major coup for CBS if they were able to get Lisa Baden, the former WTOP traffic reporter. Just sayin'...

Lisa Baden didn't work for WTOP. She worked for Metro Networks, which had a contract with WTOP before WTOP decided to take traffic in-house.

Has WNEW-FM stopped playing Christmas music? Their TuneIn page lists the format as "Christmas" but lists the song "now playing" as "The Beatles - She Loves You."

Hmmm...

Hmmm...

DCRTV reports that WNEW 99.1 has switched from Christmas music to "The History of Rock & Roll".

I think that WTOP will stay #1. This new one will probably have no chance unless commercials air on TV.

I don't know... Usually, when you're talking about an all-news station run by CBS, I'd have a hard time affixing "no chance" to it... Merlin? That's a different story... While I think WTOP will remain the leading news station, WNEW will make some inroads when all is said and done.

Really, is Pepco the best thing you should compare your new all-news station to?

Sure! Just like Pepco is sort of backseat to the bigger Vepco (now Dominion Power).

Oh, and what happened to the 107.9 frequency? Was the plan originally to put WNEW there? The idea of trying to use that in the D.C. area seems like a bad one to me. Being an adjacent to WTOP's other simulcast, and generally subject to a lot of hash and splatter, and co-channel interference, its never been a really listenable channel when there was anything on it.
