CBS Radio's Christopher Glenn

Recently retired CBS Radio anchor Christopher Glenn has passed away. I have provided a link to a story on KYW-TV's website.

http://cbs3.com/topstories/topstories_story_290173535.html

The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric just aired a story on Glenn's death. The story was less than 30 seconds long. However, these national news outlets gave non-stop, wall-to-wall coverage on the death of a Noo Yawk Stankees pitcher. Disgusting.

I was shocked to see he passed away. He had an incredible set of pipes, and certainly should be in the Radio Hall of Fame. I'm so sorry that he will not be here to witness it in person. Loved his World News Round-Up casts... Thanks for many great years of radio Christopher!

Those of us who watched Saturday morning TV in the 70s may remember his voiceovers for CBS's "In the News" segments that ran between the cartoons.

It still amazed me to hear him doing those "World News Roundup" segments in this decade.

CG was one hell of a reporter and on air anchor. What a voice and smoooooth. Rest in peace.

If someone recorded Glenn's final CBS radio News broadcast back on 2/23/06, could someone post the audio of that here in this thread so everyone can hear how good he really was, as a tribute to this great anchor. Thanks.

And they pretty obviously just copied most of that article from the retirement announcement. They refer to Mr. Glenn's retirement date as "Thursday".

I suppose we should be happy that it was mentioned at all.

RIP Christopher Glenn

I didn't catch that blunder on KYW's website story. Thanks for pointing it out.

While listening to WBZ a couple of hours ago, the Top of the Hour CBS News said Mr. Glenn lost a battle with cancer. I read somewhere else that a heart attack caused his death. The radio story also mentioned that he will be enshrined in the Radio Hall of Fame next month.

I'm still disgusted on how the CBS Evening News handled the story. They gave it less than 30 seconds airtime. I guess the Noo Yawk Stankees are more important than reporting the death of a broadcasting icon...who gave many years of service to CBS.

God Bless You Christopher...may you rest comfortably.

Julius: Perhaps there is some kind of website that has audio archives of great radio news anchors of the past. Could you look into that for us, and let us know your findings? Yes, Mr. Glenn was a great anchor and a tribute is well deserved. I agree with you there. Good point.

Former CBS News Correspondent Christopher Glenn lost his struggle from cancer and passed away Tuesday at Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk, Connecticut. He was 68 years old.

Most notably remembered as the voice of the CBS News' "In The News" segments which aired during Saturday children's programming, the show started in 1971 and continued for 13 seasons with more than 5000 episodes in the series. Glenn was also the on-air anchor during the 1986 Challenger flight that would end in disaster.

Glenn also worked in radio and had served on-air at WICC-AM (600) in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Glenn passes away just days before he was to be inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame. He leaves behind a wife, a sister and two daughters.

Update: Sorry folks, I didn't see that somebody already started a thread on this:

Man, I remember that like it was yesterday. Watching 'In the News' between Bugs Bunny and Batman. Awesome set of pipes. You knew exactly who it was right as soon you heard the first word he spoke. I remembered seeing "30 Minutes" during the noon hour on Saturdays and thinking "he doesn't look anything at all like his voice" (he had shorter hair and a beard back then). Then when I got into the business in the late 80's, I heard him doing "World News Roundup" and thinking "He's still around? Cool!" He truly enjoyed his work, though he could have retired long ago. There will never be another like him. Thanks for the memories, Mr. Glenn.

I was lucky to have met him back in 1980. He was a client of a computer outlet I used to work at and I was the technician that diagnosed and repaired his personal computer ... an Apple II Plus! He was a great guy and he had a very noteable voice - even when he wasn't on the air. What a set of pipes!

with U on that. i was always stunned he didn't get a legit shot at a bigger, more high-profile role @ cbs

but yeah, what a set o' pipes---very distinctive

Although it's been decades since I've seen those "In The News" segments...Christopher Glenn's voice is still as clear in my head today as it was so long ago. His remarkable voice and amazing talent will be missed by many. Thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.

Christopher Glenn was at USC last month to accept an award from the Los Angeles Radio Television News Association. He gave a speech at the Annenberg Center that was a prescient, thoughtful and brilliant analysis of how podcasts, blogs, YouTube and the 500 channel universe were affecting news.

He looked good, and sounded great.

He told a story that I had forgotten - but the day it happened 25 years ago, it was so funny, I remember almost driving off the side of the only freeway in Tucson.

He was anchoring The World Tonight, and ended the broadcast with some correspondent's report on a scientific study of chronic liars. The correspondent did his sigout, and then Glenn signed off: "And that's The World Tonight for (whatever date). In New York, I'm Connie Chung, CBS News."

:'( Christoper Glenn was the greatest! :'(

As a teenager I remember his five minute "In The News" vignettes on Saturday mornings placed between animated shows. When I worked in the field for all but 12 years..I'll always remember Chris' easy going delivery aimed at the older adults...he was no Byron McGregor....he didn't have to be..and wasn't . Christoper Glenn was Christoper Glenn...and that's okay with me.

Tell the Morrow man up yonder we said Hi!

Peace be with 'ya Chris!

Julius: thank you for doing this research yourself. I am proud of you. Good work. Hopefully, this positive trend will continue.

I have read about two causes of Mr. Glenn's death...one being liver cancer (as Julius mentioned). I also heard from the National newscast (CBS Top of the Hour that I heard on WBZ) that he passed away from a heart attack. The point is that Mr. Glenn is no longer with us, but with the link Julius posted, he will live on forever. May you rest in peace Chris!!

Christopher Glenn was not a CBS News employee. He worked for CBS Newsradio, which falls under Westwood One. WW1 produces newscasts under various brand names including CBS, NBC and CNN (they did news under the Fox name at one point). Even before the current corporate structure, radio news was always a separate operation from TV news. Although both are now located on different floors of the same building, for decades they were physically separate, as well. It is not surprising that the CBS Evening News would not see Glenn as a major figure (which, outside the radio industry, he was not).

The death of the Yankee's pitcher was a big story because of how he died: He flew an airplane into an East side apartment building. It's ironic that listening to radio newscasts does not give people a better sense of news judgment.

He apparently "retired" when his cancer was diagnosed.

He had great pipes but he was a news reader, not a reporter. He certainly should not be compared to someone like Murrow.
