CBS Sacramento

You forgot one group owner: Clear Channel could very well do some mix and matching of stations here in Sacramento. Horse trading of signals would be and could be a real possibility!

Good point. I do know that when I worked then on Ethan Way a few years ago,it was said by one of our higher ups that a purchase of an additional station would be a red flag with the justice department due to market revenue share. Now that was of course before the Paul and Phil franchise went away along with a fairly decent billing Y-92. Perhaps the only way to grow that cluster is to purchase a station with virtually no revenue like KJDX Susanville and move it into the market.

Clear Channel might get away with buying one or two Sacramento CBS stations if CC Sacramento's market revenue share is low enough. Thoughts?

Probably not going to see CC (sorry about that) buying a piece of the cluster. CBS would rather piecemeal it to someone else than see Clear Channel get anything else from them (strictly speaking of revenue, of course). Not my opinion, but that of those who run CBS.

Seems likely that Cox or Citadel might be the front-runners...

Newsperson responds:

Citadel is in a no buying mode. I spoke to Judy Ellis and she rudely said that it doen't matter where the station is, they are not buying. However they could exchange stations except that doesn't solve the problem for CBS.

What about Results Radio?

Any there any other hispanic buyers who still have lines of credit left?

I will look for your replies.

Newsperson

Newsperson, I have the feeling that Jack Fritz at Results Radio is taking
his time regards acquiring another property - especially if it's going to
cost LOTSA bux for just one frequency in a market like Sacratormento...

I also agree with jvp that Clear Channel will not be in a buying mood,
especially after the official announcement of the "Aloha Trust" yesterday,
of which CC must divest 50+ of its stations...

I don't know if ANYONE is in a "traydio" mood right now... ;D

I can only think of potential newbies that would buy a cluster at a time,
excepting Cox Broadcasting (and will Cox sell KTVU-TV and/or KICU-TV
in the Bay Area? The Bay Area is the only BIG market where Fox does
not have an O-and-O TV outlet...so there's potential for something there)...

What about Amador Bustos adding a (much) stronger signal to his Spanish-language network, or Entravision adding station #5 to the Sac lineup?
-salesslap

Entravision was mentioned 8/1, but not Bustos...yet looking at the majority
of Bustos Media's O&O stations, he has a lotta peanut-whistles.
Lower-powered AM/FM stations are on his list, many Class-A FMs:

I wonder if Bustos, also, can afford to spend that kind of dough CBS expects to
receive for their high-powered FM signals...

Clear Channel will not likely be buying anything for the next 5+ years. Now that they are privately owned by a private equity group, they will need to show they can be profitable with what they already own before they expand...gee, what a concept!

The good news with all the CBS divestiture of markets 16 and lower is that someone other than CBS or Clear Channel (for the above stated reason) or likely the other large ownership groups will get the opportunity to buy in and own.

The pendulum is starting to swing back to before the Telecom Act of 1996.

Maybe now an owner will be able to focus on 2-3 owned stations and run them well/competitively, instead of the 6+ that has been the going precedent the past 12+ years.

This will only be good for radio. More owners owning less stations!

We all should be welcoming this!

Excellent point, I ! What is sorely needed in most markets, and in particular the Sacramento market, is NEW blood....new media people trying to refresh and enliven what has become a fairly boring marketplace.

What I'd love to see is no more that 2 stations purchased by a single owner, so we get some new forces at play here. And, for cryin' out loud....how 'bout some different formats, some actual different choices for the listeners.....

Point well made, Burned. New blood would be welcome with some fresh ideas...but who has that kind of money in this economy?

And, partly personal to Salesslap: Ed Stolz? First off, schools out...so the playgrounds are not safe with Eddie baby around. Second of all, you're better than that.

jvparent......

Thanks......although a lot of folks who would have been radio investors followed the U.S. Government's lead {and spent about 50 times more than was coming in}, there are still some cash folks out there.

The problem would be to convince them that a not-too-streamlined operation can work out, as long as you wipe out of your mindset the old notion of "own station/print money"...I remember when that was a reality for a lot of stations {and it remains for a select few}. Just a reasonable profit...not making your investment back during the second spot block.....

Finding investors who actually care to put out a quality product....who are involved in producing something beyond just a modified current {did I just hear an engineer gasp?}.....boy, wouldn't THAT be something!

I've heard rumblings of Bonneville?

I just got off the hotline from hell and Paul Smith told me Bonneville will NOT be buying CBS-Sacramento

Reply to John Walker: there was no statement made by anyone in charge at CBS that Bonneville would be buying the cluster. Nothing "official" anyway. There were only rumours, and they were started by people reading -- oddly enough -- THIS website!

The only thing CBS staffers were "officially" told was that the stations are in play, and that it might take 6-18 months to get them sold -- if they sell at all.

Hmmm. Well I wasn't there. But I was told by someone who does business with CBS locally that they indeed had a staff meeting with the bigwigs that did say Bonneville was picking them up, for whatever it's worth

being a current employee at CBS in Sacramento, we all know the writings on the wall ;D
