CBS Sports Radio

Radio-Insight published a list of the new CBS Sports affiliates coming on January 2, and the only CT station to air the new network is WINE AM In Brookfield, which is currently an ESPN affiliate. (BTW, why would a station agree to a nighttime signal of just 4 watts)? The only other station in the general area to join CBS Sports will be WHLL AM 1450 in Springfield, which is also an ESPN affiliate. (However, WUCS, which used to be in Springfield can be heard in Springfield, so ESPN won't be totally gone from the area. It seems to me that a number of ESPN affiliates will be jumping ship to the new CBS Radio Sports, which could be bad news for ESPN radio.

It would be nice if WPOP-AM 1410 could go there. I know they won't because of Clear Channel's stake in FOX Sports Radio. Then there's a big gorilla in the market called WTIC-AM 1080...

WINE/WPUT and WHLL are owned by Cumulus. Cumulus is a partner in CBS Sports so numerous Cumulus owned ESPN affiliates are jumping to CBS SPORTS.

Why would the "big gorilla" dump its current programming to become another sports talk station? It might make a bit of sense (albeit it, a small one) for WDRC AM to go to sports instead of airing the "C" list bunch of radical righties it does now. I suppose the ratings couldn't be any worse than they are now, but we don't know since management doesn't subscribe to the ratings books anymore. Leftward ho in 2013, WDRC AM, and you just might survive!!!!!

Prog talk in New England at this point (entire stations) is limited to Brattleboro and Bangor,
and even the horrormeister took it off the FM there (he prob has enough millions to keep it
on the AM). Pol. talk in general taking its lumps (CC kicked cons talk off its 1200 in Boston)
and sports is the new must-have format, with 5 full time networks. Apparently it makes money.
The guy paying to put progtalk on in Boston is down to buying 1 hr on a Worc station and
1 on a smaller Boston one...in Seattle the soon-to-be switching KFNQ (to sports) is resulting
in some other stations picking up shows, and one is a non-comm college outlet (KBCS...
Thom Hartmann).
Maybe it's signal problems, or older people demo, or talent or who knows what. On BOTH sides.

(What attracts a more desirable demo, stations talking about the fiscal cliff or the NFL playoffs?

Mr Obama: "I am ready...for the Bears to go all the way, baby! Dut dut dut dah!")

Entercom has progtalk in Buffalo (WWKB) but not Boston. Given the electoral results in MA
(Republicans can fit into a phone booth, whatever that is :) ) one would think Ent would put
it on WRKO, but they have "righties" instead because it makes money; meanwhile there's
always NPR for the left, a type of talk, etc preferred by those on the left. And 50kW FM
signals to boot.
