CBS Tennis Runover

I'm not sure if it is a tennis runover, or when it started or if CBS planned
it this way, but...

The 6:30 ET (live) and 7:00 feeds of Katie were wiped out.

Does anyone with some insider CBS Air Control info know what is planned
re any special Mountain zone feed at 7:30 and/or 8:00 ET? Also will Katie
hang around to do at least the first left coast feed at 8:30 ET (to be refed
at 9:00 and 9:30 ET)?

As I prepare to post this, tennis is now spilling past 7:30 ET.

Thanks MarcB for, providing the start time (4 ET/1 PT) of tennis.

That meant in Phoenix both ATWT (1 PT) and GL (2 PT) got blown
out on KPHO-TV, and will be "made good" overnight per the station.

Wonder why they didn't put either tennis or the soaps on 5.2?
(It's just a weather loop.)

It's now after 5 PM PT and 5.2 is still running the WX loop--I guess it
would be a logistics nightmare to start their news on 5.2 not knowing
when tennis will end on 5.1. Might have made more sense to use 5.2
for tennis; assuming CBS didn't have a cow over WFSB-TV doing it,
KPHO-TV could have at least saved their syndication (3-5 PM) and the
local news.

I'm not familiar with the logistics of tennis - so please forgive my ignorance - but what is causing the coverage to run so long? Was there a rain delay?

I haven't been following The Tennis tournament, but I did see over the weekend they showed it raining ,and could be making up for that.As of 5:20 pm PDT tennis is still on and CBS Evening news usally starts here on KGPE 47 at 5:30.

They have a rain delay over the weekend saturday in NY so CBS put on last year 2008 Tennis but CBS do some Tennis saturday night and sunday afternoon (late) yesterday at 4:30pm after CBS NFL Sunday. Today I guess they make-up around 4pm/3ct. Most stations at 4pm carry Oparh or Dr. Phil from your local CBS stations. At as 7pm-7:30 still playing Tennis on CBS. As at 8:40pm est 7:40pm cst Tennis is over on CBS.

So for stations that normally show the CBS Evening News at 5:30 PT...is it airing now (5:44 PT)? Is it an abbreviated newscast, or was it joined in progress?

Yes the CBS Evening News is on, don't know if it was joined in progress though.

A side note is when we have live news on cable, why does anyone in the Pacific zone watch a 3 hour old newscast?

I personally agree with you, but (in addition to those who don't have cable/satellite), there is of course a segment of the population who will always prefer traditional broadcast news - even if it is 3 hours old...

KPHO normally airs the CBS Evening News at 6:00 local time -- it's 6:00 now and their local news is still running. I wonder if/when Katie will appear.

In Milwaukee and Green Bay the CBS Evening News was never aired (WDJT CBS in Milwaukee bumped tennis over to their indie sister WMLW, while WFRV Green Bay gave it to the Time Warner Cable sports channel, which wasn't awesome if you had Charter or Comcast). WDJT just extended their newscast an hour, while WFRV played a snooze-arrific government presentation about roundabouts near Lambeau Field (apparently fans after the game filled with Miller Lite have trouble navigating traffic circles and everyone's whining about it). Meanwhile I got to watch the match on WMLW in wonderful 4:3 that had the video quality of a YouTube's Fred video uploaded over a 28k modem ::). Meanwhile both stations carried their regular schedules (Oprah/Whitney and ET on WFRV, while WDJT has been promoting the Dr. Oz premiere for months, and of course they didn't want to dare take the calls from those who would have to miss Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune).

Thankfully by 8pm sanity won out and I could watch the rest of the match in HD on WDJT.

For the Eastern/Central zonies...
With tennis not ending until approx. 8:40/7:40 tonight, is CBS running
(approx.) 40 minutes late, 10 minutes late, or did the 9/8 and 10/9
programs start on time?

For the "real" Mountain zonies...
What did your affil do this evening as tennis didn't end until about 6:40 MT?

It looks as if KPHO-TV PHX is running the two How I Met... episodes at
7 and 7:30 PT, so there must have been either a pre-feed or a special
sat feed for the Mountain zone and AZ of the 8/7 hour.

For the left coasters...
It's been noted the CBS Evening News was on in FAT approx. 5:40-6 PT;
did the markets airing the 6 and 6:30 feeds get Katie (or her sub) tonight?

In Fresno KPGE 47 ran their normal programming. local news at 6, followed by D or ND,Extra, and ET, will see at 8 if they run HIMYM or one of the earlier shows pre-emted, The Doctors or Ellen.

Looks like normal CBS Monday night programming on the West Coast.

Running late, indeed. Still on CSI: Miami as right now.

Checking KCNC's website just now, it said that,
since tennis ended at 6:40 (MT), an abbreviated
edition of the Broncos show would air, followed
by the regular CBS primetime lineup at 7. Guiding
Light and Oprah would be seen in the overnight hours.

Which happened on, of all days, September 11...
http://www.biographybase.com/biography/Rather_Dan.html

On September 11, 1987, Rather marched off the set of the CBS Evening News when a tennis match threatened to cut into his broadcast. The Graf-McNeil tennis match ended sooner than expected at 6:32 p.m., but Rather was nowhere to be found. Over 100 affiliates were left scrambling with an embarrassing six minutes of dead air. By the time Rather was found and placed before the camera, most of the audience had already tuned out. Much criticism was hurled in Rather's direction. Walter Cronkite told a reporter, "I would have fired him. There's no excuse for it." Rather issued a written statement later that week that stopped short of apologizing, apparently a large enough gesture to save his job.
