CBS To Go Bankrupt?

I read an article this past week on the top 10 companies likely to go bankrupt and CBS made the list. Is there any credence to this? Also, what do you think? I kinda thought of CBS being more solid, but that again they have made their share of mistakes recently.

But I've also read that the CBS television broadcast has been cleaning up in the 10:00 pm until 11:00 o'clock daypart due to the Jay Leno debacle. And Letterman hads also been number 1 in late night. This has resulted in much more revenue for The Eye. They're extending the contracts for Letterman and Ferguson...I think Ferguson is pretty funny WITHOUT necessarily rattling off a series of jokes, but his show otherwise hasn't impressed me when I've seen it.

Last spring one analyst changed their position on CBS from hold to sell, and at the time the stock was under 5 dollars. Today it is hovering around 14. Jay Leno has done wonders for CBS since September. CBS's own management has said so. They LOVE him!

Any business that is advertising driven is a potential bust out at this point, look at any one fo the dozen radio owners that went belly up this year, or were in a financial situation that was so bad they were issued de-listing letters, Entercom being one of them.

Many of the companies on that list are retailers. Who buys print and broadcast advertising historically? Yep that's them, and along with car dealers, they are not dropping a lot of money into media buys right now, and that effects CBS, and everyone else too.

I will agree that the "brick and mortar" stores are facing a hurdle, and it is my opinion that the US Government is morally and financially bankrupt already.

The CBS problem goes far beyond just its radio division (now being thinned out, with more to come) and its television division (demos still on the upper end of the scale).

It goes down through Sumner Redstone and his daughter -- and the bailing out of Redstone's theater interests which are in deep trouble, Viacom and Paramount pictures. One hand is forcibly being manipulated to feed the other to keep it afloat.

Bankruptcy? Doubtful, especially with the herd thinning now going on in medium markets, with more to come.

CBS won't have the late night luxury at 10 p.m. that has helped it's 11 p.m. local affiliates for longer, now that NBC has decided to shift Leno back to 11:35 and dump the failed 10 p.m. experiment. It's only hope is that Leno has lost his luster now and that Conan is dumped.

Its amazing that such a huge corporation can only make gains by the failures of others. CBS hasn't made a positive move in the last decade.

I think in this day and age, broadcasting is a zero sum game. Advances only come at someone else's loss.

So CBS's success is because "We Suck Less." That's not a long range growth strategy

it's been working in politics and fast food for years, and it works in radio too, I know when I listen to talk radio I listen to the station or program I think sucks less.
