Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...okay...I'm bored, so I'll bite...

Say it's true that CBS sells KZZO...this, despite a decrepit economy
where banks won't lend out money that easily to potential buyers of
radio properties, at least for now ...

You're saying that CBS will also move their Country format from
105.1 MC to a frequency it is selling - after the fact?

OR...r u saying they should move the Country format prior to the
sale, even though it's been much more profitable than KZZO's
present Hot-AC format? I doubt a frequency change will help
KZZO's situation...

Someone's gotten wasted away again in Margaritaville -
and it ain't me...

Now where's my shaker of salt? <hiccup!>...

My guess is that information like that will be out in a press release before it's leaked out conspicuously on this board. Sounds like more buzz about a station that has the fewest listeners per R-I board postings (KZZO) than any other station in the market. The Zone has an ERP of 115,000 watts, is directional and on a shorter tower than KNCI. Their coverage is not that much different. Why confuse the KNCI cume and give "The Wolf" an edge. Sounds like a rumor from an employee at a competitor or like i just stated, more buzz about the Zone.

I was looking forward to your take on this MRK. Way to read my mind.

But why, enough of the chat on here is already about the Zone.

Not to doubt you Michael, but I always thought that FM's were non-directional and that max ERP
was limited to 100kw...admittedly I am not an engineer........

I believe that 100.5's a "grandfathered" signal, before the FCC
changed the FM rules sometime back (around 1964, no?)...
KIOI, San Francisco's 125,000-watt signal at 101.3 MC, falls
under those stipulations, also...

I'm not an engineer either :)

Directional FMs are allowed for FM stations to upgrade their facilities under limited circumstances. They are NOT allowed for short spacing in allotment situations. Example...When KBMB was granted it's original CP back in 1996, the facility was for 3kw. That's because the original application in 1987-88, was filed prior to the FCC upping Class A maximums from 3kw to 6kw. Also, the original Docket 80-90 drop in for 103.5 was probably made based on 3kw when spaced with (103.5 B1) Paradise and (103.3 B) Modesto. In order to upgrade KBMB to 6kw, the station would have to have been moved about 2 miles north or employed a directional antenna. Diamond Radio opted the directional route.

The following FM stations are directional:

KIOI, San Francisco ERP 125 kw
KZZO, Sacramento ERP 115 kw
KBMB, Sacramento ERP 6kw
KXJZ, Sacramento ERP 50 kw.
KQEI North Highlands ERP 3.1 kw
KRZZ San Francisco ERP 50 kw

Directional stations on FM only null the signal in a certain direction. Unlike AM directional stations, they do not enhance the signal in any way.

As for high powered grandfathered facilities, WMC-FM in Memphis, TN has an ERP of 300kw, but the tower is shorter than most Class C's.

You may find this information on the FCC website or Radio-Locator.com

Hey old jock '56, are you that nice man I used to work with over at Y-92?

High Powered Sacramento FM's...

Talking about high power stations, KFBK-FM (on 96.9 from 1947 to 1960-something, then 92.5 to present) was 115KW from the BEE building at 21st and Q... off a 100-foot or so tower on the south side of the building IIRC.

I remember visiting my friend Roger Hamlyn when KFBK AM & FM were on the third floor of the BEE building. AM was NBC's "News and Information" format, and the FM was automated classical.

The FM transmitter was a small, one cabinet OLD black unit—possibly RCA—in a closet along the hallway that ran N-S in the west side of the building. He had to go out of the studio, down the hall a few steps, open the door and take meter readings. (Remember those??)

When I worked at the stations, the studios had moved to Ethan Way, but KAER was transmitting from the 300 or so foot tower McClatchy built for it at 22nd and R streets... and could still have been at 115KW.

I don't think the drop to 50KW happened until after the transmitter went to the "Dave Metz" tower in Elverta.

Dale Harry was the CE back then. He'd know. Possibly Ross DuClair.

Thanks for the info guys, never too old to learn I always say.
