CBS Wants Katie Couric To Take A Pay Cut

...CBS wants to keep someone who's been #3 for that damned many years at 6:30/5:30 Central Time??!? Bill Paley spins in his grave...

She should have to pay them to do the news she has never been good at this I don't watch much news at night I work second shift Sunday to Thursday. My wife watches her I'm home on Friday night she stinks she sounds sooooooo boring cold she may have been good at what she did on Today for NBC but she is NO news person.

There was a time when Katie Couric was worth $15 million... at 6 AM. Not at 6 PM.

As it turns out, the speculation about Katie Couric leaving CBS isn't exactly true... she and the network are in talks for a new contract, but the network believes that Couric's $15 million salary must be greatly reduced if she were to remain with the network:

It's never a good sign for an employee when their employer wants them to take a pay cut. Couric is currently making the same money as Diane Sawyer on ABC, yet Sawyer has higher ratings.

$15 million? She's not worth $1.5 million. This is ridiculous.

Frankly, she isn't worth $150,000 but hey, who am I to say? I tune her out after about 2 minutes maximum. You know what she's made of, where she is coming from, where she is going, and it doesn't take 2 minutes - no matter when you are there - to follow the pattern.

This is publicity. It allows CBS to say "We like her but with the economy, such as it is, we can't afford to keep her." It allows Coric to save face by saying, "I can't take less money." It looks good for all sides and allows her a legit reason for leaving.

This is logic? Katie fizzled on the Evening News. She was hot in the morning on NBC. Let's give her the Early Show. After all, knocking off the Today Show with somebody from the Today Show worked so well with Bryant Gumbel.

What CBS should do is ....

Cut Katie's pay and move her to the 60 Minutes unit.

Absorb the Evening News unit into the 60 Minutes unit and do 60 Minutes seven nights a week.

Fire Harry Smith and drop the Early Show. Give the time back to local stations and provide live interviews and features which can be incorporated into local morning shows.

In my opinion, Harry Smith would be their best option, and move Katie back to morning duty.
He's good, but even he seems too warm and fuzzy to be the successor to Dan Rather. Is he the one you want covering the next event with the seriousness of 9-11 or the funeral of George H.W. Bush?

Strange that you cite Poppy's funeral when he is still very much alive.

Yes, but he's probably next. Not for years, most likely.

BBB: Bring Back Bob.
Schieffer? Absolutely.
A few years ago I might have agreed, but Bob really struggles on Face The Nation. He seems lost and confused at least a couple times each week. Overall, he does OK, but there are always a few moments when you can see he loses his train of thought. He's had a great, long, storied career. CBS needs to find some decent 30-something and 40-something talent to be its future.

Sounds like the grand idea for mornings in the early 80's: Hey, CBS News Sunday Morning is popular. Let's do it Monday-Friday, too! Needless to say, nobody wanted "highbrow" news at 7am. They want faster-paced, more interesting news.

Actually, Sunday Morning did start off as a six day a week show (Monday, Tuesday ....). Sunday was the only day that caught on.

CBS was at its most successful in the morning with Captain Kangaroo - preceded by a hard news show (The CBS Morning News with Hughes Rudd).
