CBS wants to move Scott Pelley off 'Evening News'

But that's what made her a personality. Remove that, and she's just another talking head. And as I said, nothing wrong with that.

When one is paid to present the news accurately and without bias, a talking head is exactly what is needed. Cronkite and Schieffer could be a talking head without sounding boring. So could Huntley, Brinkley, Chancellor, and Reasoner. Mudd and Pelley couldn't/can't.

In her defense, I don't think she was hired to be a talking head. Or if she was, they forgot to tell her. They wanted her because she brought ratings. And got her away from everyone else.

can we please keep this thread about the possibility of someone replacing Scott Pelley. talking about Katie Couric's political views that may or may not be basis will only lead to this thread getting shut down.

we don't need more political discussions over Katie Couric, i think one thread getting locked/deleted was actually proof of that.

It's not about Katie's political views (if any). She is morning show fluff and totally out of her league and out of place as a hard news presenter.
CBS seems to have embraced fluff. Now they've given Kuralt's and Osgood's chair to Jane Pauley, whom Today Show co-workers said had the IQ of a cantaloupe.
Face it, Pelley only got the job because he's buddies with the boss. Same as pathological liar Brian Williams.

Also time to divorce presenting the evening news from hosting special events coverage (as ABC has already done and as the BBC has always done).

I don't have a problem with that, but the history of it goes back to the 1950s.

NBC has divided the roles too, but the person who hosts special events coverage is the former lead anchor.

In the 50's, John Charles Daly did everything at ABC - World News Tonight, Special Coverage and head of the news division
After hosting the 1956 elections, Chet and David took over the Nightly News from John Cameron Swayze but Frank McGee and Roy Neal continued to do space shots and McGee did breaking news coverage.
Walter Cronkite did just elections and other breaking news until 1962. Up to then, Douglas Edwards did the Evening News.

The former "lead anchor" at NBC does special events on MSNBC, while Lester Holt does them on the broadcast network.

In 1954-55 he did triple-duty: ABC news anchor and VP, host of What's My Line on CBS, and host of Who Said That? on NBC.

Pelley has had the job for five years now. If they wanted someone with more of a "personality", they would have made a change a long time ago.

Or never put Pelley in the chair in the first place. It was pretty clear that Pelley wasn't the most exciting personality when he would sometimes fill in for Dan Rather 10-15 years ago.

But also 5 years ago Morley Safer and Bob Simon were still alive and working.

Bob Simon's high tenor probably ruled him out. And Morley was long in the tooth, even then.

CBS, unlike back in the day, really doesn't have a strong bench. Charlie Rose might have been a good choice 20 years ago when he was 20 years younger. John Dickerson might be a possibility. Maybe even Anderson Cooper, although he's only part-time at CBS.

It certainly doesn't help that they don't have a cable channel like NBC.

They seem to be trying a lot of people out. People who aren't necessarily household names. That may be their direction. The days of the big high profile anchor may be over.

I meant that 60 Minutes needs new correspondents now that Simon and Safer have left this blue marble. They did replace Simon with Bill Whittaker, but I don't believe they've named anyone to replace Safer. Since Safer wasn't working all that much in his 80s, it is reasonable to think if Pelley was full-time on 60 Minutes it would fill the hole they have.

Someone who I thought did well substituting on "Evening News" through the years was Harry Smith. Of course he's now in his mid-60s and working at NBC...
