CBS4, audio and HD question?

What's is up with the audio levels during the 11PM newscast?
Have been watching the HD channel 804 on Comcast on my Panasonic 42 Plasma HDTV, and the audio levels seem so inconsistent: up during during newcast, down during commercials, up during remote live cut away, down when back to studio, it's like a friggin audio roller coaster. What, no compellor/limiter in the audio chain or is it an HD thing?
Also when they broadcast a non-hd program, why are their sidebars a light gray as opposed to the darker on the other channels?
Just curious.

CBS 3 in Philly does the same thing but, not UPN 57.
