CBS4 Resources and WSBK: News38

With the resources of CBS 4, could CBS try an all-news operation in Boston on Channel 38 to compete with NECN?

You know that would nt be a bad idea. But very costly. In Rhode Island we have WLNE with a 24 hour loop of the last newscast that airs on channel 5 on cable.
Run news all day and syndicated news shows and throw in ET, Access Hollywood type shows in the mix.Maybe rerun 60 minutes a couple of times during the week.
CBS late night news overnights.WBZ 4 news 6-9 am or some sort of syndicated Radio Show during that time.If thier are any.Weekends run ESPN news if they can.
There's a bunch of ideas on that thery I can come up with.
NewsTV-38.

Does COX still carry WLVI's 10 o'clock news cast? I would incorporate that into the RI NEWSCHANNEL.
Edited by kenwood on 02/01/06 06:40 PM.

I see them selling it and the new ownders doing somrething totally different.

Like perhaps Univision switching to 38 and 27 becoming a shopping channel. :(

Don't even joke around!

WSBK going Univision would be the WORST thing to happen to it.

I agree that WSBK needs a news program in the 10 pm time slot; it definitely would be better than "Dr. Phil" anyday.

Jay R. suggests:

But WFXT-25 dominates news ratings at 10 P.M. Ratings for WLVI-56's 10 P.M. news are way behind those of WFXT. WSBK-38 once tried news at 10, and although it was produced for them by sister station WBZ-4, it couldn't make a dent in the ratings and was cancelled to make way for "Dr. Phil" reruns, which probably attract more viewers.

Were WSBK to consider resuming a local evening news program, I'd suggest it be run at 7 or 7:30 P.M., to catch people coming home who couldn't catch local news at 5 or 6 nor network news at 6:30.

WSBK could follow the lead of sister station KCAL-9 Los Angeles and run a three-hour primetime news block, but I don't think it would work in Boston the way it has worked in Los Angeles.

Forget selling it. Viacom is selling TV's in markets where they can't form a duopoly and where they have no radio presence.

As for strategy, CBS has a ton of programming resources through King World, Paramount Television and its other local stations around the country, all of whom are being led to develop local and alternative programming. WSBK may want to consider news at 8pm or 9pm; but I agree that the three-hour block seven nights a week (as KCAL does) is not real practical for Boston.

One option is the "SportsCentral" long-form sports report that KCAL and KCBS have. KCAL runs it for 15 minutes each night at 10:45pm; KCBS airs it in one to three hour blocks during Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings/afternoons. It's like a local version of ESPN SportsCenter.

For WSBK to make a serious go of it, WBZ-4 has to be strong as well. How do they do against WHDH and WCVB?

WSBK had 10:45 sports every night at 10:45 following Nightcast at ten.

Or...
Maybe they can pair it up with WBZ Radio, and call it "38EyewitnessNewsChannel?"
