CBS5 Eyewitness news

I see they changed the graphics and incorporated the Local CBS news theme.

One thing that bugs me is, they call themselves Eyewitness News but yet no one ever actually says it. All reports end with 'CBS 5'

I guess they keep the Eyewitness News title as some kind of heritage thing. It's an anachronism from the old days, when everybody named their newscast - Action News, NewsCenterX, Newswatch, News Scene, etc.

Was "Eyewitness News" originally a Westinghouse station branding, or was it used at other stations as well?

Westinghouse filed for the trademark in 1968 and received it in 1970 (with a First Use in Commerce date of December 31, 1960). I'd imagine ABC uses it by license (WABC used it beginning in 1968). CBS Corporation, which now owns the trademark, filed for "Breast Cancer Alert Eyewitness News" in 2003 and abandoned it at the end of May.

Only two other stations have attempted to get a trademark for "their" Eyewitness News: "2 Eyewitness News Primetime" from WJBK (filed 1995, abandoned 1999) and "TV-2 Eyewitness News" from WTWO (abandoned 1982; they say they started using the term on 29 April 1973, and Wikipedia says they went "NewsChannel 2" in 1994).

FWIW Cox owns "Action News" (WSB), not ABC or WPVI.

KABC-TV made a big splash with Eyewitness News - according to Wikepedia, they adopted the branding in February 69 - so they likely paid Westinghouse a licensing fee of some kind. The only broadcast property Westinghouse owned in LA at that time was KFWB-98 All News radio, which didn't use the brand. This apparently followed the successful use of Eyewitness News at WABC-TV. The New York market was similar to LA, in that Westinghouse only operated at all news radio station - 1010 WINS.

I remember that when I moved to the Bay Area in 73, I saw Eyewitness News on KPIX, which seemed odd to me, since it was at CBS affiliate. I associated the brand with ABC.

I noticed that ABC O&O's like WABC and KABC used Eyewitness News brand right after Al Primo moved from KYW to WABC and hired former KGO anchor Roger Grimsby to take the WABC news seat.
