CC Akron/Canton Struck (More Than Once) By Lightning

And as we at Ohio Media Watch resist the temptation to tell R-I board regular Keith Kennedy that he has a "smokin' hot" station...

<a target="_blank" href=http://ohiomedia.blogspot.com/2005/08/lightning-strikesand-not-lou-christie.html>http://ohiomedia.blogspot.com/2005/08/lightning-strikesand-not-lou-christie.html</a>

Tens of thousands of dollars in damage, radio stations operating off of low-end mixing boards and all sorts of fun await you at the above link.

As noted, until I heard the details, we didn't notice anything major wrong at any of the three stations in the cluster.

Thank goodness that no one was hurt!

The beauty of the whole thing was that the average listener really would have had no idea anything was wrong.

Big kudos to our staff. We were luckily able to keep things pretty smooth on all 3 stations all day, with help from many people: Keith Kennedy, Jerry Mullins, Tom Duresky, Bob Heazlit, Mark Boarman, Dan Lankford, Marty Kilroy, Don Kreiger...

I know I am missing some names, Keith, feel free to add on.

But a tremendous group of people we have!

And to Matt Patrick and Angela for being literally, about 10 feet from the strike.
As OA said, luckily no one was hurt.

So that makes two stations in NE Ohio who have been struck by lightening and had some costly damage done. CC/Akron-Canton and WCPN in Cleveland last month.

I hear that'd be three, as WSTB/88.9 Streetsboro was also hit last month. Their damage wasn't quite as expensive as what Keith and company have to replace, but their budget isn't as big as Clear Channel can afford, either...

I remember Friday morning turning on the radio and flipping to WKDD. It was broadcasting with a mono signal and had really soft audio. I had no idea what happened, but I guess a lightning strike would explain.

I am also glad nobody was injured... maybe WKDD should play Electric Boogie to commemorate the event. (Boogie woogie woogie)

I take the losses didn't include the Prophet system :)

I am sure as long an STL link and "Nexgen 2" was still running it would be easy to "cope" and make it transparent to most avg listeners :)

I've seen what lightening can do to electronics and it's not pretty (nor does it smell good) My wishes for speedy recovery to everyone at CC Canton/Akron.

We had no Prophet monitors working for much of the day. Some are still down. WKDD was actually being run from the 1350 studio for much of the day.

STL got fried. Thank goodness for the back-up transmitter site. (Right now being used as a hop so we ARE able to broadcast from Hartville, the main site)

Guys and Angela at KDD (we won't count Liz cause she's in Cleveland)

Don't cha think that a lighting strike might be the sign from above how much your station sucks. You got beat by the big Q for crying out loud.

Good thing nothing went down though.. It would suck to silence that dynamic morning show you guys have over there.. Uhhh..

Hey Allan Fee go back to work!!

That would make sense, wouldn't it? Who else would tout Q104 over WKDD in freakin' Akron and then rip the morning show?

Are you not counting Toni Foxx just for the hell of it?...

> You got beat by the big Q for crying out loud.

Uhhh. BIG Q????
Now THAT's funny. Last time the Q was big was in the early 90's went it was AC. Q104 and BIG...maybe BIG disappointment for Infinity/Cleveland.

> It would suck to silence that dynamic morning show you guys have over there..

Yes. It sure would. Take a look at their numbers. They don't lie my friend. And they are A HELL of a lot better than what Q104 pulls in Akron, or Cleveland for that matter.

> Uhhh..

My thoughts exactly. "Uhhh.."
Think before you open your mouth, oh wise one
