CC Austin / KVET budget casualties...

KVET (AM) loses afternoon talker Chad Hastings, and KVET-FM loses afternoon drive/music director Janice Williams... more to come.

Don't know if its budget related but....wow. Sammy Allred is officially no longer a member of the Sam and Bob Morning show on KVET-FM.

i checked on the other tv stations websites, kxan, ktbc, keye and there's no word about sammy allred firing. only on the kvue site. i didn't see it in the american statesman. must a publicity stunt maybe.

Re: CC Austin / Sammy's Gone

It's no joke, no stunt. It's a done deal.

"I have been there for over 35 years and have won all the awards," Allred said when he was reached by phone this morning. "If I understood anything about all this, I would let you know."

Given that CC is in a budget-cutting mood, I'd bet this is just an excuse to get rid of a large paycheck.

As far as Allred's concerned, if he really doesn't "understand", then maybe I can spell it out. In Austin, you can be mean for just so long before you get canned. Stern didn't work here and as far as I know, Imus was never even given a shot. I remember when Allred arrived in town, working for KVET replacing Arleigh Duff. In those days he was funny. Now, he's just cantankerous...and not in the good way.

Jay Vise, a show producer who left KVET in September 2006, said he was not surprised by Allred's dismissal. "At first, I thought this kind of behavior was an on-air persona, but over the four years I worked with him, I came to realize this was the real Sammy," Vise said. "What you heard was the real Sammy, for better or worse. The main reason I left was management's refusal to accept the fact that not only was Sam dragging down the show, he was becoming increasingly rude and hostile to listeners on and off the air."

No, it's not just a single word that got Allred canned, it was a combination of things....CC's cheapness, his own persona, a history of...events...and maybe, just maybe, Austin is growing beyond this kind of schlock in the morning. One can only hope.

well i was not much on sammy anyway and the other guys on klbj-fm, mix 94.7 or majic 95.5 talk shows. i usually listen to more music in the morning, sometimes i listen to bob 103 or kity (llano on the low power 102.7) or listen to cd's or some other station.

I too would like to listen to music in the mornings, and it's just sad that FM radio here has all but abandoned it.

But rereading what I said above, I might have been a bit harsh. Yes, Allred has grown tiresome of late, but I'm not mad at him, I'm sad to see a large part of Austin radio go. Without him, so much of this market sounds like any other market in the country.

He might find a gig somewhere else, but I can't imagine any music-oriented station giving him the platform he had before. His schtick might play on KLBJ-AM, teaming him with Jeff Ward would be...interesting! It would be interesting to see how long before Ward killed him on the air.

If he's got some $$$$ saved up, maybe he could buy a minority ownership in one of the little AMs that have been changing hands recently. After all, if you're the boss, no one can fire you! :D

Except Uncle Sam ;-)

I worked at KVET for awhile. The pervious poster hit it on the head - this is not the time or the climate to be cantankerous. Too bad, Sammy. Maybe it's time to take a break.

When is this going to stop? I saw this on the news Sammy was fired because of his "bad word"? I believe this is what is going to really hurt radio. They need to step back on this, I always say, if you dont like what you hear, change the channel.

"Change the Channel" doesn't work any more, folks.

Today, you've got corporations scared of the FCC and the $300K plus fines that Congress passed last year. This is what our government has become after eight years of Bush and his folks. Is it any wonder that all radio sounds the same...and that all local programming, with the exception of homogenized news, has disappeared from TV?

Thank God for the Internet.

This almost makes me just want to get XM now more and more at least they dont half to worry about that.

I don't think that this was just about sammy calling someone an a-hole on the air... He's been more and more of a liability for that station for the last few years (remember the Obama / "clean darky" thing?) - and if you've listened lately, you've noticed that he doesn't exactly join in with the show any way.. I'm guessing that his big paycheck didn't make the decision any harder..

Well I still believe that this is what is really hurting radio, not so much XM radio just the fact that FM/AM cant really do what they want without someone watching them all the time its BS really.

Sorry, FM and AM are doing EXACTLY what they want....providing the content that panders to the lowest common denominator, be it AM talk or FM "music". There has to be SOME reason that millions have bought satellite radio.

There may be another reason for Allred's demise. I can't imagine it was money because he brings in what I've heard is nearly a quarter mil a year in just his live spot endorsments. I also don't think it was the bad word thing, although that may be a small percentage of it. In the last book, KVET came in at number 2 12+, but all those 12 plusers were also 60+, totally missing the stated demo of 25-54. I think that getting rid of Sammy may be a step toward changing that. Just a thought.

And a good thought indeed....if you're billing yourself as "Classic Country" that doesn't exactly draw the 18-24 year old market.
