CC changes

I keep hearing rumors that Clear Channel is going to announce a major restructuring after the 1st of the year. They have not replaced the GM in Tulsa yet. Heard they are going to push even more syndicated shows at the stations and farmed out production.

Anyone else hearing this?

While I still have lots of friends at CC Tusa, I've remained more or less out of the loop since I left The Smooth Jazz station in '97. After Alan passed away on us, the only other guy I really stay in touch with is Kevin Seal. I hope nobody get's the axe over there. Damn nice people at CC Tulsa. They always treated me right. Everybody get a tight grip on something. The road ahead is gonna be a real high center.

What else can be cut? Seriously?

KAKC---All ESPN Radio 24/7, nothing local about that. Thrown in a little Westwood One NFL and all the programming is being farmed in.

KMOD, KTBT-Strong morning shows on both stations with good ratings. Other than farming out the DJ's during the rest of the day, what else could be cut?

KTBZ-Only local program is afternoon sports show from 2-6pm, that's also simulcast in OKC on Clear Channel's AM 1340. Chris Plank also does the graveyard shift on the weekends for Fox Sports Radio. Rest of the programming schedule is filled with syndicated programs (Patrick/Rome), Fox Sports Radio, Dallas Cowboys, Westwood One NFL, Tulsa Drillers, and OU Football and Men's Basketball.

KQLL & La Preciosa-Is there some big local presence on these stations I'm missing?

Clear Channel's stations are all bone thin right now. What else could possibly be cut, other than getting rid of all DJ's completely? I would take what you heard as a rumor. Unless someone from inside CC knows something more and would like to share.

When I think of bloated radio stations or stations with people to cut, I don't think of Clear Channel in Tulsa.

The law of the jungle: if you can fog up a mirror...you're at risk!!

Cumulus in Kansas City no longer has production staff, all commercials are farmed out to a central corporate facility.

Think CC can't pull that off?

I highly suspect they will either force Oppenheimer to go back and forth from Memphis to Tulsa or the GM from OKC will be given the "opportunity" to manage both OKC and Tulsa.

Fun to watch. Not fun to participate.

Nobody has mentioned the unspeakable. What if one of the stations goes dark? What if they just pick one and turn off the lights? What is so wrong that we are even having this conversation? When we, as you say, participate, we seem to be the last to know. Like the man said, if you can fog up a mirrror you're at risk! Truly as sad state of things if any of this is true. :'(

The Mays Boys made a lot of money at the expense of their employees. CC Tulsa has several great radio people and none of this is their fault. Tulsa is one of the original CC markets. Even back them when it was KMOD and one AM in Tulsa, they were crooks. No different from the guys running the Big 3 auto makers and the soon to be ex-Govenor of Illinois. They should all be fitted for orange jump-suits with numbers on the back of them. They should have never been allowed to own 1200+ radio stations.

Absolutely agreed, Journalguy.

I worked for CC, Tulsa back in the late 90's...Rick Cohn era. The place was a ghost town even then. I can't imagine what it's like now. I'll never forget coming in one afternoon to produce the Buzz's afternoon show (shortly after Cohn was hired) and finding the adult alternative station (KMRX) completely gutted. They had blown out the whole staff that morning (except the Name Brand Radio Guys) without a word to anyone else. This was when Dave (remember him? Former Cowboys announcer) was hosting afternoons on 1430 and was PD. Chris plank was just a junior sports director in those days. Chris, Rick Alan West, Gene Hetherington, and Rockin' John were the only guys in the building at the time who acted like they gave a rat's hindquarter about radio.

At that time, 92.1, Kiss FM was syndicated with Valentine in the morning. Tracked the rest of the day. I remember them trying to give it a brief go with Andy Barber in the mornings. But they didn't want to let him do his thang and be himself. Whata sad thing. Andy is one of the best talents Tulsa has ever seen. Give him a little budget, some respect, and some freedom and he can't help but make magic. I'm pleasantly surprised to hear what Star lets him do with his personality on middays. He sounds comfortable, at ease, and right in the groove. And he sounds like he's having fun on Star. I hope he sticks around there.

CC Tulsa a nightmarish place to work for. I felt like a number and not a person there. That didn't last long. I had to get out of there.

I hear that Rod Blagojevich is up for the Tulsa CC GM job. He will be perfect.

I think he clearly understands the CC way of doing business. Bob, don't be jealous that I didn't pick you for the CC GM job.
There is a lot wrong with you. You would want to do live, local and compelling radio on all 6 of their station. I think the upgrade would be very discturbing to the listeners. The shock could kill them and you would officially be a murderer.

Bob, you are very good, but you cannot achieve the standard that has been established. Hope you are over it.

Plus, if you caused their stations to make a profit, there would be all that tax stuff to mess with. And Lowry needs the write off. You would probably want to be paid too.

I feel like a such a loser! You're right man.....I'd jut screw up the whole operation. I'm sorry I butted in. In the Spirit of Christmas please forgive me.

Glad I was able to have you "save face" before you took the job. Leave it to the pros please.
I will ask them to send you a few of their station t-shirts so you can participate in the "play along at home" version.
