But then you have one less station generating revenue. You guys really dont get it, do you? WLW does not need a simulcast partner. Adding 102.7 will not create more revenue. In fact, it will lose revenue by deleting what comes from WEBN. WEBN is not going away. FM simulcasts of AM NewsTalk stations are not a guarantee of success. Look what they're doing with KOGO in San Diego. That simulcast will probably end soon. It didn't work.

With AM especially being a dying medium... could they move WLW to 102.7 FM and just... STOP broadcasting on 700 AM?

I don't know. Just throwing (obvious) crap against a wall.

Clear Channel will never end Broadcasting on 700 WLW. You do realize that 700 WLW was literally one of the FIRST AM Stations in the country and at one point had to be told by the FCC to turn down their broadcasting wattage because it was so strong people in other parts of the world were able to pick up the broadcasts.

If anything, WEBN will probably wind up simulcasting; as previously mentioned. Frank Wood is turning in his grave. As Kiesewetter posted a photo on his blog. "The Frog is Dead". Anyone in their right mind that thinks that WEBN will still be the same now that the entire crew that MADE that station what it was- now no longer works there; is fooling themselves. And I fear that with the firing of Joel Moss- sadly the piss ass bean counters that work for CC; will now take YEARS of Joel Moss' Fireworks soundtrack and they will sadly be recycled... :(

If you have ever heard any of the interviews of Joel Moss talking about creating the WEBN Fireworks soundtrack it is a lengthy process that is timed and synced to the Rozzi Fireworks, which in of themselves are created specifically for every year's show. I wonder what the Rozzi family thinks about all of this?

I will also add- that having one person doing the work of three people really defeats the purpose of even having an operational radio station.
 
It sounds as though CC is making their terrestrial stations into satellite radio lite. A few formats, run by even fewer peole.
 
I don't think Kiesewetter was saying "The Frog is Dead" as his personal opinion. I think he was making reference to the picture you saw in that blog, where Q102 had Riverfront Coliseum put "The Frog is Dead" on their electronic sign board.

And no need to put WLW on an FM signal. WEBN may not be what it used to be but it's not going anywhere. They used to say the same thing about WMMS in Cleveland, how it would change formats and such.
 
Right on Bill. If the people on this board had had their way in years past, there would be no WGRR, Q102, or WARM 98. Those three stations were declared dead by this board, and look at them now. WGRR and Q102 are highly successful, and WARM 98 has battled back to respective numbers. Why you would even think that moving WLW to FM makes sense is baffling. You would lose the WEBN revenue, with no guarantee you could make it up with WLW on FM. Advertisers are not going to automatically pay more to be on FM. And, what if the FM simulcast makes no difference at all? You've just handed 96 Rock all of your numbers. EBN is back up numbers-wise. It would be nice to know what 96 did, but we're not allowed to see their numbers.

With WKRC having that Translator. i could see CC Putting Lance & Mo and find some more local hosts and do a local sports talker to compete against CBS Sports Radio on 100.3 FM either putting that on 102.7 or moving Kiss over to 102.7 and putting the sports on 107.1

they attached a lot of "if's" to it.

Actually, while WLW was one of the early entries into the broadcasting business back in the 1920's, it was granted temporary authorization to use its 500 kw "superpower" from the Feds, which it did for a number of years and that enriched Crosley Broadcasting greatly. What happened was that once WLW proved superpower was possible, a lot of other stations wanted it.
That wasn't going to be possible for all that sought it. And, after an intense lobbying campaign, by the other stations, WLW was then told by Washington, it would have to reduce it's power to 50 KW.

The purpose of superpower WAS to be heard as far as possible. That was Powel Crosley's idea. That it made it to Berlin, Germany at night (much to the consternation of Adolph Hitler) is a legendary story.

All that having been said: while I don't think WLW is going anywhere for a long time, an FM version sometime, somewhere might be necessary as more audience deserts the AM band. The AM audience is seemingly getting smaller every year nationwide. Few people under 40 bother to even listen and a lot of people under 30 don't know AM exists. Sure, WLW still gets a hefty share and has maintained it. Good for them. But, it comes from a growing smaller overall AM pie every year.

Responding to another point in your post: show me a business where people aren't expected to
"do the work of 3 people". It's not just happening in radio.

CC is also cutting her show which Voice tracks from Indy. Not sure if Abby is local or not.

WEBN-FM has dumped another DJ with ties to its past — midday host Laura Steele.

Steele still works for Clear Channel’s WFBQ-FM (Q95) in Indianapolis, but WEBN-FM has pulled the plug on her 9 a.m.-2 p.m. show which she “voice tracked” (pre-recorded) from Indy. She’s apparently still voice-tracking for a couple of Clear Channel stations in Texas, from what I can tell from web searches.

Excuse me if I missed something here, but radio has been doing this now for about 10-15 years. There's nothing new in it...
 
Exactly Jason. They're looking to make WEBN younger. The music had gone more Active and so should the jocks. Not really that hard to figure out, unless you're stuck in the past.
 
Younger people listen to the rock format on Pandora & Spotify not terrestrial radio. I think thry are fishing in a barrel for that demo.
 
Microbob, that is such BS. Young people are still listening to terrestrial radio. In fact, the latest survey that came out last week showed that Pandora listeners are music lovers who listen to terrestria radio even more than non-Pandora listeners. Please stop spreading the myth. EBN and 96 Rock are still pulling in healthy young demo numbers (at least the last time I saw 96's numbers)
